Occuring to Dell it means your power supply is failing or has failed.

Hello here is the home page:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/ussoho1/Product/optiplex-gx280

I think you have some kind of a virus or malware on your system.

Install this program and make a full scan:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

You maybe have to start the pc in failsafe mode by pressing F8 while you reboot.

Install also a better FREE antivirus program:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201

Please uninstall any other antivirus programs before you install microsoft security essentials. Run a full scan when installed and updated. It`not great to have more than one anti virus program installed. Most antivirus programs have a background scanner running to protect you from virus vhile you surf on the internet open a file etc. With more than one antivirus program the pc`s performance will be decreased.

There are a lot of things that can cause a computer to shut down. This could also be the power supply.Try also to renew the thermal grease between the cpu and the fan but BE CAREFULL not to damage the cpu.
If you are unsuccessfull at resolving the problem visit a computer repair shop.

When you talk about checking memory, it's the physical RAM stick inside the computer. RAM does not have sectors like a hard disk drive. If it does happen to be bad I'd replace it with at least 1GB to 2GB. 512MB is really low.

Good luck

Beeps 6x

POST ("power on self test") codes for the Dell GX280 are in a format of n-n-n as in 3-1-2. This would sound like 3 beeps, followed by 1 beep and finally 2 beeps. If you're not paying attention, that 3-1-2 beep code could sound like 6 simple beeps.

Dell has a page for the GX280 dedicated to Troubleshooting Tools and Utilities. There's a great deal of information on it - but the POST codes you're looking for are explained in detail about mid-way down under "Beep Codes" This document and associated links should go a long way to help you properly diagnose the problem with your GX280.

Please take a minute to rate this reply if it was helpful to you. Good luck!

Dell Optiplex GX280 restarts suddenly? all files closed and . the restart could be after 2,3 minutes of power on. I don't know why its behaving like this?

Hi, sounds like a crash, do you get any report messages after reboot? Try starting in safe mode; press Del button during initial bootup, once in safe mode you can reset to a time before the problem started. Hope this helps, if not come back to me?

Addboat,
I have wasted enough time in Dell community for exactly the same problem. Even a link mentioned by Move_n_man above, on 8 Oct. 09 refers to my posting in Dell community. Its nothing but a crashed bios and unfortunately theres none who could tell how to flush the bios and reload fresh bios in the bios chip when computer does not boot.
Dell is in no mood to help! So do the so called experts of the Dell community.

No compatibility problem in your case. XP should work well with Dell optiplex gx280. Try re-installing the OS, there is problem with the OS version you had used to install.Rate me if it is useful!!

Dell Optiplex GX280 - On power ON , no Fan movement no display

Confirm no leaking or bulging capacitors on your mothboard.
refer to here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague

As this was a common problem with the GX280.
If found, you will need to replace the capacitors.

The other check is to make sure the heatsink is fitted correctly, perhaps reaply the thermal paste if you have any. I know that high temps would switch the GX280 off.

Which CPU's will A Dell GX280 MB ser # CN-OH726 support

The CPU must match the motherboard. You can go to the MOBO manufacturers website and find out exactly which CPU fits on that model. Without that information from the manufacturer you may fry something on the board.
Don't forget to rate this solution before logging out.

Well seeing as how im Dell certified, I can help you or you can go to the dell support site and look at the error code manual and it will tell you.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen

and heer is directly to the light diagnostics information, read it and find what is closest to what you have.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx280/en/ug/tools02.htm#wp1114432

Go to system trouble lights.

Most likely you have a bad memory stick or the mother board is going bad.

Im pretty sure your warranty is out, unless you have an extended. You can check the warranty infomation by entering the service tag number at support.dell.com Or just give it to me and i can check for you. Its a sticker on the back with a bar code and about 7 digits or so, kind of like ( 071BH7) or something simialr.

Also, Dell has had a major problem with that model and the mother boards blowing capacitors, Once we know what the issue is, hoepfully we can get this resolved.

What type is it, Small form factor, Desktop, Smal form desktop, Tower ?

Let me knoe, and we can get going.
