I also have a GX280 with this problem. I have just turned it on after 2 months being away from home and nothing appears on the screen unless I press one of the little configuration buttons, when it says "In PowerSave mode ..". Nothing happens when I move the mouse or press anything on the keyboard. Also, one of the fans inside makes a lot of noise. My A and B buttons are yellow and Cand D buttons are green. Inside there is an orange LED by the memory slots which is always on whilst the power cable is plugged in.
I would really appreciate any advice - I thought this was a pretty good machine until now. I bought it second-hand 6 months ago; it has XP Professional loaded.

    Best wishes,

    John

Well seeing as how im Dell certified, I can help you or you can go to the dell support site and look at the error code manual and it will tell you.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen

and heer is directly to the light diagnostics information, read it and find what is closest to what you have.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx280/en/ug/tools02.htm#wp1114432

Go to system trouble lights.

Most likely you have a bad memory stick or the mother board is going bad.

Im pretty sure your warranty is out, unless you have an extended. You can check the warranty infomation by entering the service tag number at support.dell.com Or just give it to me and i can check for you. Its a sticker on the back with a bar code and about 7 digits or so, kind of like ( 071BH7) or something simialr.

Also, Dell has had a major problem with that model and the mother boards blowing capacitors, Once we know what the issue is, hoepfully we can get this resolved.

What type is it, Small form factor, Desktop, Smal form desktop, Tower ?

Let me knoe, and we can get going.

Dell optiplex GX280 tower machine, pc reboot again and again, fan run so fast and make alot of sound, also power light blink red instead of green, i have changed rams but facing same problem, what sho

Hello here is the home page:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/ussoho1/Product/optiplex-gx280

I think you have some kind of a virus or malware on your system.

Install this program and make a full scan:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

You maybe have to start the pc in failsafe mode by pressing F8 while you reboot.

Install also a better FREE antivirus program:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201

Please uninstall any other antivirus programs before you install microsoft security essentials. Run a full scan when installed and updated. It`not great to have more than one anti virus program installed. Most antivirus programs have a background scanner running to protect you from virus vhile you surf on the internet open a file etc. With more than one antivirus program the pc`s performance will be decreased.

There are a lot of things that can cause a computer to shut down. This could also be the power supply.Try also to renew the thermal grease between the cpu and the fan but BE CAREFULL not to damage the cpu.
If you are unsuccessfull at resolving the problem visit a computer repair shop.

When you talk about checking memory, it's the physical RAM stick inside the computer. RAM does not have sectors like a hard disk drive. If it does happen to be bad I'd replace it with at least 1GB to 2GB. 512MB is really low.

Good luck

Dell Optiplex GX280 restarts suddenly? all files closed and . the restart could be after 2,3 minutes of power on. I don't know why its behaving like this?

Hi, sounds like a crash, do you get any report messages after reboot? Try starting in safe mode; press Del button during initial bootup, once in safe mode you can reset to a time before the problem started. Hope this helps, if not come back to me?

Massive noise, now unable to access computer at all. constant amber light, not moving to next stage, nothing on screen, several thermal events previous to it blocking my access

Noise is most likely CPU Fan racing. Fault is most likely motherboard failure (Solid Amber power LED is usually MB and thermal events could be associated) Replace the motherboard

In my Dell Optiplex GX280, the processor fan was not start properly its run moderate speed for continuously but within 10 mins the pc shutdown automatically, after turn on the error show thermal heat...

Sounds like improper contact with the cpu and heatsink. If the fan runs...it runs and it'll do it's job but if the contact isn't proper, it'll overheat. These are older machines and the thermal paste that Dell uses turns to power after hundreds of power cycles. Buy some cheap silicon based thermal paste, clean off the cpu and heatsink with some 90% ir greater iso alcohol and apply a small rice grain sized drop of paste on the cpu. When you install the heatsink, give it a couple of twisted to spread the paste out.

Should be good to go.

Which CPU's will A Dell GX280 MB ser # CN-OH726 support

The CPU must match the motherboard. You can go to the MOBO manufacturers website and find out exactly which CPU fits on that model. Without that information from the manufacturer you may fry something on the board.
