Can't remove the pump cap

The message "Pump Blocked" was displayed and I followed the instructions provided in the manual to resolve. Although it has happened in the past and I was able to resolve the problem by opening and clearing the pump, this time something seems to be blocking the pump cap and I can't remove it. Short of breaking it and replacing it, do you have a suggestion?

Problem is probably a bra wire or similiar catching in the body of the filter. you will just have to pull hard - you are unlikely to damage it

Washer stops, shows SD on display then F- alternate with 21

A display number preceded by the letter "F" is an error code. The error needs to be resolved before the washer will resume normal operation.

"F21" is a Long Drain error code. This is usually an indication that you may have an obstruction somewhere in the drainage system. Most commonly, there is something lodged in the drain pump or inlet line running from the wash tub to the pump. There is a white screw off cap on the drain pump that you can remove to inspect the pump impeller and clean. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608588-f21_error_code

Included is a follow-on link that explains how to check the drain pump to clean. You may also have to remove the inlet hose that runs from the bottom of the wash tub to the inlet side of the drain pump. Debris and small articles of clothing such as socks or under garments can become lodged in this area as well causing the drain cycle to fail.

NOTE: A "SUD" or "SD" error code can also often occur in conjunction with the "F21" error code. This is due to air being detected in the drainage system, which can occur if the pump is not running, or if you have an obstruction BEFORE the pump. You need to remove the inlet hose from the pump to ensure it is also not blocked. Correct your drainage system fault, and the SUD error (if displayed) should go away.

NOTE: If these preliminary measures do not correct your problem, you may have to replace the drain pump. It does not take much to damage the pump impeller or motor. Since the error code is generated if the drain cycle exceeds 8 minutes, if the pump is damaged and can't pump at the required volume, the error code will continue to appear until the pump is replaced. If the pump requires replacement, the following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574350-replacing_the_drain_pump_in_a_front_load

These are both very simple repairs that you can perform yourself without the assistance of a repairman.

NOTE: For an explanation of all the error codes, each one of these washers comes with a technical data sheet inside.

To access, you will need to remove the lower toe panel under the door. The access screws are located under the bottom front edge of the panel. You may have to prop the two front fett of the washer up for better access ( a 2x4 works well for this). With the screws removed, the panel should drop down, then come off. If the tech sheet isn't directly behind the panel, it will be affixed to one of the interior cabinet walls.

The tech sheet lists all error code definitions, troubleshooting data, diagnostics procedures and wiring diagrams. I mention the tech sheet because you may need it to troubleshoot this error code.

Read through the information provided and if you have questions, please post back and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

What does L 21 error message mean on my whirlpool frontload washing machine

There is no "L21" error code on a Whirlpool Duet model washer. There IS an "F21", however. This is a Long Drain error code which is usually an indication that you may have an obstruction somewhere in the drainage system. Most commonly, there is something lodged in the drain pump or inlet line running from the wash tub to the pump. You need to remove the inlet hose from the pump to ensure it is also not blocked. Correct your drainage system fault, and the SUD error (if displayed) should go away.

If you have any questions about this repair, or need additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: If the error I've explained does not match the symptoms of what your washer is doing, please elaborate a bit more, so I can provide you with better assistance.

My LG WM 1260FHD is displaying OE. I have cleaned out the filter (4times) and have manually had to drain it 5-6times. Ihave now tried it with out clothes in it & the water does not seem to drain from...

Hi

You either have something blocking the pump propellors or the pump itself has failed.

You need to get to the pump. I suggest laying the machine on its back. Disconnect the power and hoses before hand.

There is a cap on the pump, where it joins to the filter cavity. You need to unscrew that cap. I believe they are star shaped screws. Once you remove the cap, look to see if anything has gone through the filter and blocked the propellors. Alot of times it may be a hair pin or some small object. If there is nothing there, then I suggest replacing the pump. Make sure when you are putting the pump back on, that you have the O-ring sealer in place.

good luck

Hotpoint washine machine ERROR F5 machine blocked

Do the following.

  1. Switch off the machine, unplug or disconnect the mains power to the machine and turn off the water supply to the machine.
  2. Remove the filter and make sure that the filter is not blocked and is clean and clear of all debris. Clean as required. Note that if the machine has stopped and not fully drained then you may be able to drain out the excess water by removing or disconnecting the waste hose and laying it on the ground in a tray. It may take a few minutes to empty but it will save a small flood. Alternatively bale out the sump under the main screen filter plate.
  3. Proceed by checking the drain hose for proper connection and kinks and make sure that it is not blocked or restricted.
  4. Also check that the main waste drain pipe and one way valve to a sink waste connection if you use one, is not blocked and clean if required.
  5. Access the pump from under the lower rotor arm and protective grille and check that the impeller is free to move and is not clogged or restricted by debris or sludge. Clean as required.
  6. Reconnect the power and switch the machine on.
If the problem persists then do the following.
7. Switch off the machine and disconnect the mains power. It is a good idea to take digital pictures of the pump assembly before attempting to work on it or remove it so that you can refer back to it when you reassemble the unit or replace it with a new unit at a later date / time.
8. Remove and check the electrical connections to the pump and make sure they are in good order.
9. Remove the connecting hoses, and expect water to drain out and make sure the pipes are not blocked with debris or any object blockage. If they are then clean them thoroughly.
10. Then remove the pump and check motor is OK and that the motor turns OK. Also check that the pump impeller vanes are in good order and not blocked. If necessary replace the pump with a new and identical unit.
11. Carefully reassemble the pump observing the correct placement of gaskets, seals, O Rings, hoses and securing straps, electrical wiring.
12. Reconnect the hoses and then reconnect power and switch the machine on.

Own a Bosch Exxcel 1400/1200 Express. Cannot remove the pump cap in order to remove loose debris from inside the pump. If I break this in trying to remove it, is there a spare part I can order?

Yes, the cap is available for purchase - just saw one on a website for £7.85.  But you don't need to break it, read on...
Best done on a warm machine but it was freezing cold when I eventually succeeded as follows: Similar to above, spray threads with lots of WD40 /liquid wrench type spray -- although its impact will likely be negligible, it reduces the risk of snapping the cap somewhat. Then use a good quality pair of long handled, adjustable "Water pump pliers" (like this: http://images.google.co.uk/images?um=1&hl=en&q=Water+pump++pliers&btnG=Search+images ). Get pair that provide several grooves that allow you to set the minimum gap allowed. I bought a pair 25 years ago, German made, they have undone numerous things (cars, plumbing, household) where nothing else came close. This is the best tool in the world - period. So don't skimp, get a good pair (not those floppy loose screw types), with flat parallel jaws (a notch for nuts in both jaws is fine). Set the gap on the tool close to the width of the hande/spine of the cap. Carefully place the jaws along the plastic "handle"/spine of the cap and slowly turn, be careful to maintain a firm but not excessive grip -- use the leverage of the long handles if you are not terribly strong. Magnifico! (Found: a plastic clothes label tag & much blue powder/limescale around it). After cleaning, lightly lube the threads with WD40 type spray and reassemble, not too tight - use hand tightness only if you can. Then follow the machine instructions (1 litre of water in chamber II & run the "Drain"-cycle) to flush the pump. Done!

UNABLE TO REMOVE PUMP CAP

Try some heating, it would expand the cap a bit & hence enable you to unscrew. Or you can break it open, after you are sure you can replace with a spare from a shop.......... If it has cracked it will sooner or later leak.
