SOURCE: I turn on my xbox 360 and it says open tray and wont read disc
I have had this happen about 3 times. The first time was when i figured out how to fix it. The 2nd and 3rd were temporary.(Just needed to be turned off for a moment) You need to shut the console off for atleast 15 minutes 10 at the lowest with everthing unplugged. I mean the hard drive, memory unit, and all cables, and adapters. Then after 10-15 minutes plug everything in and DON'T PRESS the BUTTONS ON THE XBOX OR THE CONTROLLERS. Press the button to open the tray and take out the game or dvd and put in a different one. If this doesn't work do it all over again and then put in a different game or dvd not the previous ones and turn on the console the same but then a soon as you get the disc in and closed in shut it off then open the tray and wait till you are at the main menu go into any program so you can't see it is reading and close the tray. If that doesn't work contact the xbox support line. Really hope this works for you.

Slap the top of the the box as you press eject. that will get it open.
then wipe a little rubbing alcohol on the black belt
just under the tray . And a little petroleum jell in the
tracks under the tray . Then open and close the tray to
work it in.

SOURCE: xbox 360 starts up randomly, tray opens and closes spontenaously
I have the same Problem my X box came on spontaniously and the DVD tray opens and closes non stop till I get the RROD code. it will play games and DVDs only if it stays closed long enough to start then it opens up and starts the cycle all over. I opned up the DVD drive and can't see any thing blocking any thing I even used a Q tip to pit a little oil on the screw meckanisim that opens the drive and blue it out with compressed air. and it did not fix the problem I am going to have to buy a new drive my Drive is a Philips drive.
