Question about Western Digital Passport WDXML800UE (WDXML800UETE) 80 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

WD Passport will not accept transferred files anymore.

Have a 250G WD Passport formatted to NTSF for my Vista Laptop.
I use the Passport to store my media files, it's not even a quarter full and now when I try to transfer files accross the status bar doesn't progress and nothing happens. This happened before and I had to remove all files and reformat it which worked for a while but the same problem has risen it's ugly head.
Any ideas or advice?

Yeah, same problem. I have a WD Passport 120. It seems that the transfers slow down to a virtual stop if not completely, explorer seems responsive for one click, but then all visual aspects of explorer itself hangs, through other processes can be accessed, just not viewed for more than one user interaction. I have run every utility, reformatted with different options, played with write caching, drivers, and the only things I am able to say is that it might be a loose micro-usb female housing..... I have seen people wrangling this problem all over forums, and youtube. There seems to be no solution, and it is totally irritating. I am going to rip it apart and find another external drive housing to see if that helps. The only thing I like about this drive is it is pretty. If I can refrain from crushing it, I might use it as a paperweight (I am looking hungrily forward to labeling it ****, and impaling it on my fence). Please let me know for the sake of WD's image local to me if a solution exists.

I tried to format my 500gb WD passport essential with exfat using windows 7 for my mediastar pvr . Now neither pvr or windows 7 can see the harddrive

Windows 7 does _NOT_ support 'exfat' drives, as you have found out.
You can "format" the drive, to use 'FAT32' or 'NTFS' file-systems.

File won't transfer, but HDD has plenty of space for it

In Windows, if you use fat 32, your file will be up to 4GB. Format your passport hd in NTSF to solve this problem. Note, save all your data, because this process make clean HD, all data will be lost.

I purchased a WD My Passport external hard drive to transfer my iTunes files from a Mac to a Windows Vista machines. Had to reformat it to FAT+ first but copied the files from my Mac to the WD external....

Simple, your BIOS is setup to boot on external devices first. Try prioritizing your system to boot up to your system hard drive if you don't want to see that error anymore.

Can't retrieve data

Be sure to use the WD supplied USB cable to connect the drive. I had a similar problem with my WD Passport 320 and was told that using a cable other than that short 8 inch cable can cause some odd operations.

Wd passport file customizing

If you open the Computer directory and identify the drive letter for the WD Passport drive, right-click on the drive folder and select properties. The properties tool for the drive will open showing several tabs. Select the Customize tab and you will see a heading for "use this folder type as a template" with a drop down menu. Here you can select different categories for the folder and apply it to subdirectories also by checking the box below. This should give the folders more of a vista look! If you want to personalize further and add your own images to the folder icons you can also do this here. If you don't select the apply to subdirectories option you can manually apply different styles to different folders in subdirectories. If you don't like the way things have turned out you can also restore the default settings.

Hope this answers your question.

Cannot copy large files onto my WD passport

Your drive is probably in FAT32 format.  FAT32 has a 4GB file limit that is why your 5GB movie isn't saving.  You will have to format the drive in Mac OS file format (HFS) using Disk Utility.
Unfortunately once its in Mac format the drive will not be recognized by windows PCs.  What I do is have a program called macdrive installed on my windows computers so that they can access mac format hard drives.
i hope this helps!

WD Hard drive no longer works

This is mostly a power issue, but if you use a hub it may be latency as well. Some USB ports limit power to 400-500ma per port, the Passport Essential needs a bit more than 1000ma and won't work at all with these computers. Other USB ports/hubs limit the total power available for all devices combined... this is why, in your case, you can use one drive, but not both.

FYI, higher speed devices also tend to need shorter cables due to latency. (Light & electricity travels about 1 foot, or 30 cm, in a billionth of a second; this limits the size of high speed devices. In layman's terms, latency is the Brontosaurus effect, since the head takes a while to talk to the tail.)

To boost power, Western Digital recommends using a 22" USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable (WDCA029RNN) to combine the power of two USB ports into the one Passport Essential USB port--it is also a bit longer than the original 18 inch cable. For all EXCEPT the black Passport Essential drive, you may also the WD Passport™ Power Supply Adapter (WDPS021 for the US voltage version). See Western Digital knowledge base ID 1296 for more on this issue.

Hope this helps!
