Re: Cannot finalize disc with a panasonic DMREH60D
I also have a DMR-EH60 which after some time failed to finalize recorded dvd's. When finalizing the dvd unit was making grating noises and then would display the finalized failed note. The machine was sent in for servicing which worked fine for a few months and failed again. In dicussion with the technican we found that the rubber drive plater for the disc was getting contaminated with a dust type residue which allows the disc to slip in it's drive causing the reader to be confused, with the result of a failed finalizing function. If you are game disconnect from the power and open the unit up and carefully take the top off the dvd unit and clean the plater with is-propyl alcohol, this seemed to work fine. The residue problem will be an on going problem however once you have cleaned it once it's pretty straight forward.Just be careful removing and reinstalling the dvd top cover.

The power supply board on the DMR-E85H has problems. The earlier boards suffered from leaking capacitors and the later boards from voltage regulator problems. Go to the following links for details and photos on how to fix: Replacing capacitors:http://www.fixya.com/support/t216825-dvd_recorder_frozen_please_wait_display Replacing the voltage regulator:http://www.rbjtech.net/electrical/e85/e85.htm#0 Hope this helps. My machine had the same problem and has the later ps board. The voltage regulator replacement worked perfectly.
Sorry for your loss. If he transferred everything using his Panasonic recorder, it is possible that he never finalized the discs to be played in other machines. If you still have the Panasonic, put the disc in and press the Functions button on the remote ---> choose Other Functions from the screen --> Disc Management --> Finalize your disc. This is one of many possible reasons but a good start. Good Luck - Tamara
We need to narrow down where the problem lies. Even without finalizing the disc, you should be able to play back the recording. Can you do this? If you can play back the recording, the problem exists in the finalization stage and we'll need to concentrate there. Pplease update this and we'll proceed to the next step.
I own one and it is a pain to work. Put in the disc and vhs tape and hit the bottom right button, I believe it says DVD and above it says dubbing. Hold it for a few seconds and the screen will come up and the system will do the rest recording from your VHS tape to the disc. You MUST finalize the disc after you are finished if you want to watch it in another DVD players if not it will only work on the Panasonic. Hope this helps. If not here is the site for the owners matual http://www.panasonic.com.au/support/downloads/file_type_results.cfm?fileTypeID=2&productCategoryID=54
I couldn't figure out how to finalize the first disc I recorded either. It wasn't offered on the menu where the manual said it should be. I finally called Panasonic and found out that the disc I used cannot be finalized. I am new with all this, and I just used the DVD-RAM that came with the DVD recorder. This may be obvious to you, but DVD-RAMs can be used over and over again but cannot be finalized. The person recommended -RW that is rewritable but can also be finalized. Maybe this will help you, too.
In addition, if you have the correct disc, you should be able to go into "Functions," then "Other Functions," then "DVD Management," and see "Finalize" as an option there.
