Question about PC Desktops

Iomega Screenplay multimedia player with integral HDD Drive won't boot (just makes peeping noise), PC doesn't recognise external drive, but splash screen shows on TV.

    I thought this device was just a hard disk with an interface buil-in to attach to a TV. The sounds it makes aren't like the beeps made by a motherboard as a PC boots, it sounds like the HDD is not beginning to spin, it's as if it's stuck. Is it likely to be an HDD problem/failure, and if so can it be resuscitated enough to get the data off?

Useless wasting any more time on this.
Hard drive beeping is always motor failure or head failure.
All data are lost and the internal hard drive must be replaced.
Data recovery must be done using a facility called 100 clean room, and wont cost less than $800 or so.

See the link below if you need more detail and data recovery, that is the facility I use, as I do not have a clean room of my own: Recovering data from hard disk drives with motor failure ..

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, lets try a process of elimination:

  • power supply (unlikely), unit powers up;
  • interface & electronics (unlikely), splash screen still works;
  • firmware (a possibility), can not complete self0initialization or hangs for some reason;
  • internal storage (most likely), possibly interface/firmware can no longer recognize, would explain failure to initialize, would explain unrecognizable by PC.
Recommendations:
  • physically remove hard drive from unit;
  • connect HD to an external SATA/IDE to SUB adapter with PSU and connect to USB port of PC;
  • if PC will recognize and access, then firmware issue;
  • if PC will not recognize and access, the hard disk problem.
Should you find this posting informative and points you in the right direction, then pls ACCEPT. If however you decide to REJECT and/or request additional feedback, then further information from Benimur would no longer be viewable.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

The hard drive may have failed, how is your warranty? if the hard drive is just clicking it is most likely failed and would need repair service. you might possibly be able to fix the problem by replacing the hard drive yourself but there maybe files needed by the projector for it to work properly I would turn to your dealer or Iomega for repair service about the Hard Drive. A failed hard drive is not something you can fix at home.
Thanks

How long have you owned the unit? How long have you been having this problem. It sounds like the HDD in the unit may have failed. It will most likely require professional service. Once I have more information I can assist you further or help you in finding a service center. Please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.
Thanks,
Lee

Bios boot order is ignored, pc boots from HDD instead of cd-rom drive

Disable the LAN, USB, and HDD boot and let the CD-ROM be the only selected boot device. Some systems allow you to select a boot drive when you see the Manufacturer's splash screen by hitting the F12 key.

Wont recognise HD, have to disconnect DVD drive and floppy drive to force it.

While it can be a faulty hard drive, please make sure you have checked the following:

  1. Update BIOS.
  2. Check if Master/Slave jumpers are set. If you have DVD and HDD (hard disk drive) on the same cable, set HDD to Master and DVD to slave.
  3. Check that the Floppy cable is correctly connected. If connected wrong, the light remains on.
  4. One or both DVD and Floppy are faulty.
When the PC starts, BIOS checks the integrity of components in a sequence, if one component is damaged it will stop and give an error. Like say the HDD comes after floppy and DVD. if the DVD is faulty, then it will hang at DVD and not proceed to HDD.

How do i connect an external hard drive to my LG LCD Tv?

The LG's will support an external USB hard drive, but it seems the USB support was intended for thumb drives, so yuo need to do the following to get it working:
  1. the drive must be formatted FAT32 (like thumbdrives)
  2. keep the file names short
  3. keep the directory structure simple and as flat as possible
I have a 60GB laptop drive in a USB 2.0 enclosure drive working really nicely with good transfer rates. It takes it's power from the USB socket and is working fine.

Hope this helps.

Could be that your Iomega player is lacking the same type of Codec that was used to encode the Audio in the AVI Files.
