Question about Computers & Internet

7 Answers

We have a HP pavilion dv2000. When turned on the screen became static (snow) and went black. Now when turned on no screen comes up and the wireless light won't show and the caps lock lite won't light up. There's no sound. The DVD door will open when button is pushed. We tried to hook it up to an external monitor but no luck there. Any ideas?

There isnt any beep. .theres pretty much no response from fan, monitor, screen or the caps lock and wireless lights.

  • shaleelee29 Dec 05, 2008

i love how this site works =)

ive tried plugging it into different outlets, even taking out the battery and putting it back in. still, its the same. . power lights turn on, cd drive runs, then turns off, but no response from the screen, fan or sound coming from the machine.

    no power shortages or outages.

is there a chance with this brand of labtop, there is some kind of protection or something on it so that if the fan malfunctions, the harddrive and computer will not turn on?

or is there potential that my problem is caused by a harddrive malfunction?

Sorry, I missed that part about it being a laptop.

"is there a chance with this brand of laptop, there is some kind of
protection or something on it so that if the fan malfunctions, the
hard drive and computer will not turn on?"

    - I'm not sure of that ... If the fan doesn't run the processor will heat up super fast then it will overheat and burnout.

You are getting power, but no hard drive lights?
Could either be processor or hard drive failure.

But, I would try to boot to a cd before I replace anything else. if you can boot to a cd , then then problem is your hard drive.

Try a windows install CD if you have one.

Have you had any recent power surges / outages or lightning storms?
If your monitor goes out, typically you will not get snow, it will just go black. If your monitor is working btu the pc is not, then you typically get a no video message.

I would try unplugging everything and using a different outlet, plug the monitor into the wall and see if that turns on, if it does, then that should be fine and the issue is your pc (which sounds like the case since no fan or lights are coming on.

Plug in you rpc and turn it on - be sure to note any sounds or lights. At minimum you should here the fan. if that doens't come on you will have to start troubling shooting each peice of equipment.

Let me know how this goes and we'll go from there.

It's a bad hard drive. If u have any bootable cds, dvds, floppys....try booting to one and if you can.....bad hard drive. I had the same problem with an HP laptop.

Hi there. I have to agree with fidoliedo and Binary Bob. Just to comment on resetting the BIOS by removing the battery (as in solution 4). The battery being reffered to is the CMOS battery, which is located on the motherboard. On most laptops, to get to it, you will need to take them apart, and even then, some can be a real pain to get out. I would not recommend this unless you know what you're doing.

Also it very much sounds like the FSB. Had the exact same problem with my Acer. It's to do with the memory slots and the motherboard/system board. Just thought you'd like to know.

System board. Inverter sounds like it's working fine because you can open the CD door and so forth, but since the system won't power up, your board is out.

Remove the battery and connect your ac adaptor. Wiil it power on?
If not you may have to replace the ac adaptor or possibly the system board.

If it powers on, Try to get into the system BIOS. Press <F10> at power on. Can you get into the BIOS?

If you get into the BIOS verify that the Boot order is as follows:
Boot Order—Set the boot order for:
❐ USB Floppy
❐ ATAPI CD/DVD ROM Drive
❐ Hard drive
❐ USB Diskette on Key
❐ USB Hard drive
❐ Network adapter

If not there is a chance that you may need to replace the system board. Tray this and let me know what happens. Thank you, Binary Bob

hi I have you tried resetting the bios by removing the battery, there could be many things to look, from buying new item and changing them which could cost as much as buying a new machine or a refurbish of the same type then you have spares part in the future

My HP Pavilion dv2000 turns on, but screen is black

If the laptop appears to boot up but the LCD screen is black, then the problem is a back-light fault caused by either a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to determine the fault and fix :-

Have a HP Pavilion DV2000 that the screen went black and I connected it to an external monitor that is Black as well. What should I look for next.

This sounds like the symptoms of a known issue with the DV2000 series. I don't know if they're still doing it, but a few months ago they were fixing them free even out of warranty. Read the following article by HP and see if it applies to your situation. Good luck!

I have a HP Pavillion dv2000 that just went black on me. Power light is still on but the screen is black and not responding. please help.

Hi!

Most common cause for this happening is the inverter or backlight for your LCD screen has become faulty. It's quite a common problem & unfortunately the only way to fix it (if its outside of warranty) is to replace the LCD with an LCD kit which can be ordered through HP or sometimes through eBay.

Obviously if it's still within it's warranty perioud, contact HP Customer Support for a replacement/repair.

Hope this helps

Hp pavilion dv2000 notebook will not boot up

hi,
i m in Hong Kong. The stupid HP repair center charged US 90 just for inspection!!!!! They they said the whole motherboard had to be replaced, thts additional US 630 dollars, the thing is just 1.5 yr old. They also said i don get to keep the broken mother board after replacement. This is simply irresponsible, unethical, sleazy and UNJUST!!

Thanks. right now the computer is fixed for US70. when i hv time, i'll open it up and see if i can figure it out how it was fixed. The shop suggested tht the computer wont last too long. This is such bad quality for HP... Sorry, i hv to do the following for other victims to find this easily:
(can some creative netizen bring this to the public light to pressure HP to do the ethical things??)
