My JVC DR-M78BU will not play DVDs with a country code of 1. On the back, it has a globe with a 1 in it. It will play Japanese DVDs but not American. I don`t get it. Please help...

Somebody changed the country code on that player. BTW, it is illegal to change the country code on a DVD player. I would call JVC and see if they can fix it - usually they wouldn't, but since your player clearly has a 1 on the back, then they may have a solution.

The following is for illustrative purposes - these are NOT the codes/procedures to unlock your JVC - I merely post them to show you how one might go about changing the codes on your JVC player - once again, this is not the right procedure for your particular JVC player:
To select an alternative region for this player:

  • Press the Power button on the player to turn it off.
  • Wait 5 seconds.
  • Press and hold the buttons DVD Menu and On Screen on the player together, and then press the Power button on the player to turn it back on.
  • Release the DVD Menu and On Screen buttons.
  • Press the Standby button on your player, the display should now show either "TEST 2", "TEST 4" or "TEST 6" depending on the player region.
  • Press the DVD Menu button on your player twice in a row, the display should now show "000 5858".
  • By pressing the Up and Down cursors buttons, change the first three digits until they read "02E".
  • By pressing the Right and Left cursors buttons, change the last four digits until they read "0000" for Region Free, "0101" for Region 1, "0202" for Region 2, "0404" for Region 4.
  • If you experience difficulties with Region 4 discs, change the above setting to "0458" and make sure that PAL or NTSC is correctly set on your player.
  • Press the Enter button on your player to confirm the region change.
  • Press the Standby button on the player to turn it off.
  • Wait 5 seconds.
  • Press the Standby button on the player to turn it on.

One more thought - go to General Settings --> Factory Set (pp.20-21 of your manual), and see if that will change the encoding. It probably won't, but worth a shot.

I need to play a region 1 DVD on my jvc xvs42 but it is saying wrong region code

this will happen from one of 2 things. either the dvd is not a region 1 or the dvd player is not a region 1. if you purchased the player from ebay resently then i would return it. if the dvd player is old and always worked then your dvd is probably not region 1. sometimes when the dvds are packaged there can be mispackings that happen so even if the dvd cover says region 1 it may not be. try another dvd. if another dvd works then the first dvd is the issue.

Bought a dvd from England.JVC dvd player will not play dvd.it is on stop and will not play.

American DVD players will not play European DVDs because they use different region codes, you can normally play them on computers, but DVD players are normally coded for only one region.

It is hooked up correctly and i am only able to watch burned dvds. No regular american ones or regular european ones! Why is that? Please help

Check the back of the DVD player. What is the region code on the unit? You will only be able to play dvds with that region code (or a universal code - globe icon).

The manual for the unit is here: http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4139513111.pdf .

If it isn't playing discs from the region that it should, I'm not show how to fix the problem. If it is under warranty, contact Sony (unless you know someone tried to remove the region code and failed).

Got dvd from New Zealand and it is a pal programme and I cannot get it to play in UK.

Hello,
The reason your dvd player may not be working is that each dvd player has a region code that is designed to only work with dvds in that specific region to prevent pirated movies from being played. Here are the region codes:
  1. United States and Canada
  2. Europe and Japan
  3. Southeast Asia
  4. Latin America and Australia
  5. Russia, rest of Asia and Africa
  6. China
The code should be displayed with a sticker some where on the back of you dvd player that looks like a "globe with a number in it". You will have to visit the the manufacturers website of the dvd player to find out how to change or update the region code because the information is stored on a ROM chip inside the dvd player and is referred to as firmware, this same code is also imprinted on the dvds sold in your country and the code must match that of your dvds in order for it to play. So what you need to do is go to what company manufactured the dvd player example:Toshiba, Panasonic, etc and check the site to see if they allow you to be able to reset the region code to your countries setting. Hope this helps
