Elura 50 record direct to SD card

My friend also has an Elura 50 and he is able to record exclusively to SD past the 30-second time limit that seems to exist on mine. He's not sure how his was configured to do that, but I can't seem to find any difference in his config and mine. I have a 4 gig SD card lying around and I'd like to use that exclusively instead of having to deal with tapes (and the potential dreaded "REMOVE CASETTE" error. Does anyone know how to do this?

I forgot to mention my friend's camera can record to MPEG format.

SOURCE: Remove The Casette Message

I was having the same problem with my canon elura 70.  I called Canon tech support and they told me that there are three possibilities.  1) The camera is made to not accept tapes when the tape heads and path are dirty.  2) There is condensation in the camera.  3) There is an internal problem that would require you to send it in for service.
The first is a $15-$20 fix.  Go out and buy a cleaner that will clean, not just the tape heads, but the entire path.  In other words one that is not just a brush that moves back and forth, but one that winds on to both spools and gets pulled over the entire path.  Unplug your camera, take the battery off, take out the watch battery and the SD card and let the camera sit for about 20 minutes before cleaning.  Put all that stuff back in--PLUG IN the camera to the wall charger, then clean the tape path.8 out of 10 times this will solve the problem.
2) If there is a moisture droplet on the screen, this indicates condensation.  Unplug your camera and let it sit in a controlled temperature room for about 2 hours.  Do NOT use a hair dryer unless it has a no heat setting.  The heat can fry other components.
3) If it isn't one of the other two...it will most likely need service.
Hope that helps. Don

SOURCE: Remove tape error message

I used my hairdryer to blow dust out of the cassette compartment. It worked for me.

SOURCE: "Remove the cassette"

I only got the problem when the tape was bad. Usually the ribbon got folded, or was very wrinkly looking. Eventually I found out the drive was bad, and had to have it replaced.

I can't record more then 20 sec video file

I'm sorry to inform you but after researching your camera only records for 20 seconds. It has nothing to do with your card. Only 20 second blocks of time.

Movie mode - The total amount of recording time available is shown by the green "00:20" in the lower right hand corner. This is SHQ 640x480 resolution at 30fps, the maximum recording time is 20 seconds. In the lower quality 640x480 @ 15fps or 320x240 size, the recording time is limited only by space on your xD card. The shaking hand icon indicates that we have the image stabilizer turned on.

Horizontal lines on display but firewire and SD card work fine

Hello people who face similar problems...

First confirm whether it is a problem with the head assembly/ dirty heads.

Do the symptoms appear only on the camcorder's internal TFT side display or is it visible on an external monitor (connect using the AV cable supplied) and the EVF(electronic view finder) also.

If it is visible on the EVF, TFT Side display and the external monitor then it is definately a case of Bad video heads or the tape guide requires to be aligned or calibrated

Camera stops recording video

When recording movies in the SHQ image quality mode, I am restricted to 15 seconds of recording time per movie. Why?
In SHQ mode, the FE-230 records movies with VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels) and a frame rate of 30 frames per second. Recording this much data, this quickly, requires a large amount of camera memory and a very quick write time.
Olympus’ Type M+ and Type H xD-Picture Card media are high-speed cards and are able to process this volume of information with no loss in quality. Other commercially available media, including Type M and Standard type xD-Picture Card media, are not able to do so. For this reason, this model limits movie recording in SHQ mode to 15 seconds when using media other than Type M+ or Type H cards. The 15-second restriction guarantees that the camera will be able to process the data properly and produce a smooth, error-free movie during playback.
Keep in mind that there is no restriction on movie recording length, other than the capacity of the storage media, when recording in the HQ (320 x 240 pixels) mode.

I'm not sure if you are recording in SHQ or not. Try switching to HQ (press menu, then select image quality). It solved the problem for me. Btw I got the solution of the Olympus FAQ page on their website.
