Question about Televison & Video

DVD Menu selection not available from Setup Menu

Trying to format new DVD+RW
Pg 27 of Manual says to go to Setup Menu/DVD Menu
Only General Settings and Timer Programming menus are available.
Title List and DVD Menu are grayed out

Does auto-format when inserted, but trying to record gets This Program is not recordable in +VR mode
If I use a DVD-R, I get This Program is not recordable in Video mode. Both issues say to change formatting in DVD menu.

Trying to record movie off DVR from HBO.

I did resolve the first issue. The DVD menu is only available when there is no DVD in the tray.

Still need help on the 2nd.

  • sue_mclean Jan 14, 2009

Thanks, but from what I can see, this DVD recorder has a record-once restriction which the error does not reflect. It will not record anything to DVD from the DVR or tapes recorded on its own VCR, yet it will record to the VCR multiple times. It will record to DVD from tapes recorded on another VCR.

I have yet to try recording direct bypassing the DVR, but I'm betting it will. I just get so aggrivated with every test, and wasting DVD's that I give up.

Secure technology at it's finest! Shoot!

I don't have movies from premium channels, but do have cable HD channels. When I got the message re not recording in +VR, I copied from DVR to HD in PhilipsDVD-R and then dubbed to DVD.

No option to finalize disc

Either the disc is already finalized or there isn't enough space on the disc for finalization. Check if you have Auto-finalize enabled. Press Setup and go to the line "General Settings" with the up/down arrows. Press Enter. Then select Recording and Enter. Go to the Auto Finalize line and press Enter. Check both Disc Full and End of Timer Rec and see if these are set to On or Off. This option is explained on page 27 of the manual (page 29 of the PDF available from Funai Service http://www.funaiservice.com/manuals/SYLVANIA/ZC320SL8/ZC320SL8.PDF ). Remember that the finalization takes 20-50 MB on the disc.

I hope this helps.

Disc will not finalize error comes up as e19 can not record to the disc. the show is actually recorded and will play back just not finalize. have tried -r/ +r and + rw and get the same message. unit being...

You don't need to delete timer rec programs to Finalize, Format or Erase discs!

Set the Mag 2160A (mfgd in 2009) to Source L3 (DV) using the Source button on the remote.

To Format a RW disc, set unit on L3 BEFORE inserting a new disc cuz the Formatting op is automatic and starts right away. It's also so short on a +RW (longer on a -RW) that you could think it had been Formatted.

Finalizing requires you to select it from the Disc Edit menu, so you can set the unit on L3 after inserting a disc for this op.

More into on all aspects of setup and op are here:

I can format dvds or record what is wrong

make sure that when trying to format dvd's you are using the bottom portion of the controls. i know it sounds silly, but the center arrows are for dvd playing and control....ff...rw....play, and the lower controls are more functional.
i'm not sure, but if you put in a blank dvd-r disk, it will allow you to format after going to the "setup" then using the lower arrow moving the selection over DVD. format is allowed in that selection. If you have already recorded on the DVD-R i don't believe it allows you to format, it only allows you to edit or finish.
i'm not sure how the dvd-rw works as i haven't used one in a long time. in theory, you should be able to format a DVD-rw.
hope it helps.

See the manual, page 8:

What are “Recording modes”? for DVD-RW
There are two recording modes available using this
recorder: VR mode and Video mode. When recording to
a DVD-R disc, recordings are always in Video mode.
DVD-RW discs can be formatted for VR mode recording
or Video mode recording.
VR mode recording
• 4 different picture quality/recording time settings available
(SP, LP, EP, XP)
• Not playable on regular DVD players
• Recordings can be extensively edited
• Total number of titles on the disc should be less than
99.
Video mode recording
• 4 different picture quality/recording time settings available
(SP, LP, EP, XP)
• Playable on regular DVD players (after finalizing)
• Limited editing features
• Total number of titles on the disc should be less than
99.
Note :
DVD-Video Format (Video mode) is a new format for
recording on DVD-R/RW discs that was approved by
the DVD Forum in 2000. You may therefore experience
problems playing recordable DVD discs in some players.
Symptoms include video artifacts, audio and/or
video dropouts and playback suddenly stopping.
Our company cannot take responsibility for problems
playing discs recorded on this VCR/DVD Recorder in
other players.
