Question about Garmin GPS

1 Answer

Okay, I have the new Nuvi 880 with the built in FM transmitter. To use it of course I try and find the best unused station available which for me is FM 88.1. The problem is I still get some static coming over the speakers, if I put my hand on the nuvi the static goes away. There must be a way to eliminate all the static without the human touch, any ideals? Leo

Would it help to install an external antenna? There is a hook up for it.

The problem is that these units put out a very low level signal on FM. This is mainly due to restrictions and rules established by the FCC. The levels are such, so that they don't interfere with other nearby equipment or radios.

When you go to touch the unit, your arm is acting like an antenna, making the signal from your Nuvi propagate better to your car's radio.

If you are using a window mount, you are somewhat limited in what you can do. The closer you move the Nuvi to the car's antenna or radio, the better. Just for fun, try positioning the unit on the dash (while sitting still). Can you find a spot where it sits right over the radio that sounds the best with minimal noise? If so, you might want to get a friction mount and put your Nuvi on the dash, right over the radio.

Another thing you can try is getting a plug that fits in the headphone jack, like at Radio Shack, and soldering a couple feet of wire to ground lead of the plug. Plug the plug with the wire into the headphone jack. This is what manufacturers of consumer FM transmitters provide as a means to make an external antenna.

Are you sure that's for the FM and not an external GPS antenna? If it's a gold circular jack about 1/8" diameter, then thats for an external GPS anetnna.

Have new lap top [toshiba satellite] have connected tomtomgo 520 twice and on both occasions my wi fi connection has been disabled

Built-in FM Transmitter to transmit sound over own car stereo and lets not forget Best hands-free calling> Best guess is that your computer is finding and trying to connect to the blue tooth connection since Toshiba has blue tooth capabilities, also you could be losing the wifi signal just because the FM transmitter is overpowering the the wifi signal. If i had to guess though i would go for the blue tooth connection as being the problem. Hope this helps

No sound when put on 88.3 fm

I didn't think this unit had an included FM transmitter - so I looked around for more info, and everything I've found indicates it does not.

It will however play audio via the built-in speaker or headphone jack. Use of a third party FM transmitter will allow playing audio (navigation, alerts, MP3 or audio books) when connected to the headphone jack and with both the FM transmitter and FM radio set to the same frequency.

The FM transmitter will work best when set to a frequency that is unused and has the least amount of interference from adjacent stations. Check by tuning the car radio across the FM band and note frequencies that have those qualities. Leave the radio on one of the clear frequencies and set the FM transmitter to the same displayed on the radio. You should try several to find the one that works best. Also, be aware that as you travel, you may enter an area where that frequency (or one close by) is in use by a broadcaster. This will require repeating the process as needed to reduce interference.

No sound from Garmin nuvi 760 by any method

Sounds like your speaker went south. Since your fm transmitter is working I'll be your earphone jack is too. So you could always use an earphone. Only other option is a speaker replacement.

Using my car speakers with my Garmin Nuvi 350

No, unfortunately ther is no way to get the unit to use your car speakers. To do this, the unit would have to have an FM transmitter or be able to connect to one. It does not have this capability. Sorry.

GARMIN NUVI 350

HI Heather,

Make sure you don't have the sound muted. Have you tried plugging in a set of headphones into the headphone jack? If you can hear sound with the headphones, most likely, the internal speakers have failed. If you still can't hear any sound, the audio output stage on the motherboard has failed. In either case, you will need to send the unit back for repair. Be sure to have your serial number handy. Register it online https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/marketing/register.htm
if you haven't already done so.

More Info: If you can hear sound through the speakers and don't want to send the unit back for repair, you can buy a FM transmitter at Best Buy - the kind that will allow you to play a portable CD player through your car stereo. Just plug the transmitter's audio input cable into your GPS headphone jack, power the transmitter with your car lighter jack, set the transmitter frequency to a unsued FM channel and tune your car stereo to tha same channel. You should hear your GPS through your FM stereo.

Good Luck,
- Jim

Garmin Nuvi 660 - how do I get FM Transmitter firmware

I believe in your location it comes as an option. transmitter is an optional module. You can browse the user manual at following link (PDF file) http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/1262_OwnersManual.pdf
You can see at 35th page, simple instructions have been given for FM transmitter settings.

If it doesn't work please contact to the Manufacturer. I couldn't find Garmin's Ireland number. However you may call UK number +44-870-8501242. Or simple you call your reseller.

Good Luck
