Been having issues inconsistent. lower fuel mpg. recent trip lose power on interstate climbing hills. city quick acceleration choke out. highway on cruise shifts out of overdrive and then down a gear. been told the code was bad egr valve- replaced it- 2 days later came on again. been told it is the trottle control sensor??- dont bye it. Now been told it is the catal conv.-for $ an exhaust guy will cut it off see if it is good and replace new if needed or else reweld the unit back.
The code p 4044 refers to exhaust gas recirculation range /performance--reading above or below the specified range
could be a problem valve or solenoid or wiring
the remark about the cat converter is valid as it indicates that when under load the cat converter is blocking the exhaust
this occurs when the honeycomb internals cracks and the bits block the exhaust exit under high gas flows ( from your use description)
you can get replacement cat converters that use flange fittings and they are therefore cheaper when needing replacing
cat converters crack when running hot and are then immersed in extreme cold ( snow , running ice water)when driving

Well this could be in your timing. As cars get some miles on them the timing chain stretches therefore causing you car to lose alot of power. So you may want to have your timing set on this car. Also I had a taurus that had a bad torque converter, and it lost alot of power on hills and under loads, also when i gunned the gas pedal. so try the timing first. Hopefully you dont have a bad head gasket or a cracked head these symptoms you are describing are all signs of head gaskets or blown heads

On alot of cars you must erase the code after repairs, the code is pending in the memory and can still run bad till cleared.try clearing the code
