Rinnai 556wta gas heater keeps shutting off

I have a rinnai 556wta gas heater in my apartment newly installed and it keeps cutting off after only minutes or an hour or so and flashing the number 53 in the center and a red flame symbol. It will not stay on and has a number of other issues...including incorrectly reading the temp of the room, only allowing me to set the temp as high as 76 degrees, and (without programming) reseting its temperature to a lower one. The management of my apt complex appears hesitant to address the issue. They installe dthe heaters a few weeks ago and we are just now using it. The filter is clean. I suspect there was an issue with installation. Any suggestions on what might be wrong and what to tell them?

Return the heater while you can, we bought 2 of these and have had the same problem with both of them. One of the units they replaced all the guts and still had to replace it. The other unit is out of warranty and I am considering just replacing it to save on repair costs which will eventually equal more than the cost of the unit. The thermostat wire is located in the back and can be stapled to the inside wall up off the floor. It was not installed properly. Good Luck!

Rinnai 556 WT gas space heater flashing PF

most modern gas heaters use a code system to tell the operator what the problem is. look for a pattern in the flashing, and then compare that pattern to the literature on the inside of the heaters panel. When you have a diagnosis code, you can follow the appropriate course of action.

Rinnai gas log heater (royale) keeps cutting out. now it wont stay on at all. the ignition is fine, the gas flow seems fine and the fan works fine. we vacuum the dust out regularly

When you say "it won't stay on at all." Do you mean the burner and the pilot flame shut off together or does the pilot remain lit? Is the unit showing any Fault Codes on the LCD display?

Still looking for a surge absorber for a Rinnai energysaver 551F in Australia .Part Number DSA302M

If you have a part number you should be able to go to any plumber/gas fitter and ask them to order it through Reece/Tradelink etc.
Try ringing Rinnai direct, parts and sales is on 1300 555 545, ask for the nearest stockist.
Most Rinnai spare parts are a number begining with 9 for Australia. The code you have sounds like a Rinnai Japan part number. Might cause confusion if you try and order it.

Try this link to a 551 service manual. It has a parts list and expolded diagram. Don't worry that it's a pommy site. The heaters are the same.

Wont heat above 58 degrees

not knowing where you live or what the average temp is, it's tough to help you. If I may assume that the heater used to heat just fine and now it is not, I would look at either not enough gas supply (bad gas regulator at meter or tank), or the temperature probe is not giving the circuit board the correct reading. Remove the left side panel against the wall and look for a yellow wire with a black rubber tip. Take an ice cube and place it on the probe. The heater should turn on. Now pinch the probe with your hand. Your body heat will eventually tell the unit to shut off. If it has no effect, you will need a new probe (they call it a thermister). Have your gas company check the gas pressure and make sure it is within spec. The WTA model has some programming that may have scrambled. Reset the set temperatures by following the manual or going to Rinnai.us to view one. Hope this helps.

Rinnai 556F Not Exactly and "Energy Saver"...

Raise the thermistor. It is a black rubber probe located on the back of the heater close to the coldest spot in your home, the floor. Raise it a few inches. To do this you will need to unhook it from its holder and open the front of the heater to unravel the extra length of yellow wire.

Max temperature for Rinnai 556WT restricted to 74 degrees

There is no way to restrict the setting and keep it UL approved. If you cannot get the heater above a certain setting you have either too small of a heater, too much outside air entering the apartment or the gas pressures are not great enough.
