My Philips DVD8421 burner will not recognize a blank DRD-R disc.
I have been trying to burn a photo story for some relatives as a Christmas present. My burner will not recognize a blank disc. I have attempted to use both "Roxio DVD Builder" and "Photo DVD Maker Pro" without success.
I can put a commercial DVD disc in or one I had previously written to, and it reads/plays it fine.

Re: My Philips DVD8421 burner will not recognize a blank...
Ok, the reason is quite simple. The Philips DVD8421 does not recognise the DVD-R format. Not all DVD/CD burners read all discs. It does recognise DVD+R though. So all you need to do is use these discs instead. This should solve your problem.

This problem is weird because if you already tried using alot of disc and still it wont burn this can be a problem with the burners , this can be a softwarer related problem I will advice you to contact JVC and ask them if there's any software update for this devices...
Insert a blank recordable DVD into your DVD burner.
Use Photo Story 3 for Windows to create the story you want. On the Save your story page, you will have options "Save your story for playback on your computer", "Send the story in an e-mail message" and etc. If you scroll down to the last option listed, it will say "Save your story to a DVD for playback on your home DVD player". That is the option you need to choose to burn the slideshow on DVD. Click Next to temporarily save the photo story.
On the Completing Photo Story for Windows page, click Continue and save your story to a DVD for playback on your home DVD player.
In the Create a DVD dialog box, put in the DVD Title and Video Title as well as choose the DVD burner you desired if you have more than one DVD burner installed. Click Create DVD to start the buring process.
Please note: Sonic DVD for Photo Story 3 can only burn DVDs. It does not burn CDs. Also, only one story can be burned on each DVD. LAST UPDATED: Jun 25, 2007
Have you checked device manager to see if you have a yellow checkmark on your DVD./CD drives? if ok, sounds to me like the maker of the LH-20A1l BLO5 either needs to fix your problem or replace it. The Nero 7 should enable it to work correctly.
have you checked the web site for drivers update
and which burning software are you using if you are using on board xp stop using this and got for nero burning if you are on xp sp1 and try and upgrade to xp sp2 or win 2000 sp4 and clean cd lense and try that if same resaults it's time to redo windows as you may have currupted dll files and change usb leads over if possable
