I purchased a dell C800 laptop at a auction. The only problem I had with it is when I unplugged it. It dies with in 5 seconds. I purchased a new battery thinking that the battery was the problem. No change. I hit the test strip on the battery and it says it is 100%. When I unplug the cord it still dies in about 3-5 seconds. Any thoughts on why the battery wont power the laptop when unplugged?
Check the pins that connects the computer to the battery. Something might be bent and wouldn't make contact with the battery. Turn the system on with both the battery and ac adapter plugged in. Press F12 on the Dell splash screen. Go to Page 4 (press ALT-P to move to pages). Check if the battery is detected. If not then the motherboard needs to be replaced.
You can contact Dell Spare Parts dept: 1-800-357-3355. Just give them the service tag of the system so they'll know the part number of the motherboard.
