Garmin iQue 3600. Locked uo and cant turn off, in final steps of upgrading to release 6 with Garmins instructions.

I submitted a question for GPS repair, (first time) on 12/02/08 and again as stated above. This is the 2nd time for describing the problem. I cannot give any more details than the following. I also paid to my account $15.00. I have not recieved a solution or any answer to my problem question, other than to restate the question. How much longer must I wait, which I am willing to do if the time is reasonable.

Arthur Lederle Comment posted on Dec 04, 2008 7:20 pm # 3 posting E-mail ID # 40 from FixYa requested me to resubmit my question. I have a Garmin iQue 3600 GPS/PDA unit that is in a hard 'locked up' stage. Because of a previous problem, (unit went into a 3 screen loop only when it was in GPS map mode, antena unfolded up'). I closed the antena ('fold down') and all other functions worked ok, until I opened the antenna again, to start the GPS. Since this was a 'constant loop', I tried to update the unit's software. I downloaded Release 6 from Garmin along with their instructions on installing the upgrade. All went well until I neared the end of the instructions. I was requested to do a 'soft reset', which I did. The unit would then turn off for a few seconds, then turn on again displaying the 'PalmPowered' screen, which it did. I was then told to follow the instructions on the next screen. Before I could do anything, a screen containing a 'reset' box, and nothing else in it came up. I tried to do the reset by taping the reset button in that screen, but nothing happened. I did a 'soft reset ' again, but the same sequence of screens followed. OF MORE CONCERN TO ME AT THIS TIME, IS THAT I CANNOT TURN THE UNIT OFF.
Must I let the battery run down, or is there a way to get out of the 'hard freeze'? Because of this lockup, I cannot get to any of the PDA functions, making the unit useless. I went tnto a little more detail for this THIRD description of the problem.

    Hi Arthur,

Sorry about your issue with your GPS and paying for a solution, which didn't get answered. First, the advice I give is free and I don't pursue paid questions. Second, My expertise is the Garmin Nuvi series. I didn't know what model you had until you answered my question. I am not a participant in the paid expert program.

I assume that the battery is internal, so you can not disconnect it. Again, I am not familiar with your model. When I hear problems with booting after a firmware upgrade, this is usually an issue of corrupted firmware from a bad flash.

On the Nuvi series, the power button can be held down and force the unit to attempt to reboot. Is there any possibility that you can try to reconnect it to your PC and attempt to reflash the firmware again?

Sometimes you get a corrupted flash if the device has not been safely removed before removing the PC to GPS cable. Sometimes the device is still being written to unless you select safely remove it.

Also, this may not be an issue in your case, but it's always a good idea to have the unit fully charged before attempting to perform a flash of the firmware.

May be a hardware issue. I had similar behavior when I replaced my IQue 3600's battery. If the circuitboard inside wasn't seated properly on the contacts coming from the battery, the iQue would keep rebooting. Start by checking that all the external screws are snug (but not over-tight). If not, you can try to open the case to check the two screws inside holding the circuit board. But I'll leave that up to you, since I can't honestly guarantee that you're experiencing the same problem. (After all, you seem to be sure that it has something to do with the software...and you may be right.)

SOURCE: Fritzed Unit when antenna up

I have a similar problem but I can't turn the GPS off at all, even when the antenna is down. As far as the power on/off cycle, I found another link on this site that said to turn off WAAS while the GPS is off then when you turn it on the unit will not power cycle continuously. You loose the WAAS feature but the GPS and unit still works.

SOURCE: Ique 3600 does not work why?

iQue 3600 - mine had the same trouble, but a new external antenna solved the problem. I'm guessing that the "Flip-up Antenna" goes bad after awhile. There are many who use the external antenna. Check Ebay.. buy a new one, not used. Best Wishes, Mark.

Ique 3600 does not work why?

Well unfortunately, sounds like it's replacement time.... same problem I had with mine. Even with an external antenna...no or little signal. Garmin charges $200 canadian for an exchange unit.
So much for costumer support.
Good luck.

Garmin 3600 GPS issue

I just started having the same problem today too. Go to preferences for gps. I did it by clicking down where the battery symbol is and where the satellite indicator comes up. Then click the quegps in the top left hand corner of the screen. Click preferences and disable WAAS. Seemed to work fine after that. I would like to have WAAS enabled so if you find anything else let me know. Wierd that happened on same day. Let me know s.conley@hotmail.com.
