Re: oil on floor underneath washer
The oil which you see on the floor is coming from the gear case. The gear case is not repairable and it has to be replaced. If your washer is less than 1 year old do not wait and call Whirlpool - it is under full warranty. If your washer is between 1 to 5 years old, then the part is still under limited manufacturer warranty but you are liable for any trip and labor charges. It could be much over $200.00. If you are handy and willing to save money, you can buy the part for less than $150.00 and replace it yourself. Searched for the model on the web and didn't find it. I am assuming that it is an older top load model. Front loaders I don't know about.
Is the grease appearing just in the drum or is there some on the floor underneath. Either way I would say you need to replace the transmission. If you have an old 12-15 yrs washer I would get a new one. The replacement trannys only last a couple of years at best and aren't worth the money to replace $200-300 if your machine is ready to **** out. The only places on a washer that have grease are the clothes you're washing and the transmission. The tranny will mostly leak onto the floor but can sometimes get into the drum.
Remove the agitator and inspect the upper shaft bearing condition by trying to push the shaft in various directions. It should not be possible to observe movement in a good bearing. If the bearing looks good, then replace the rubber seal just under the plastic block on the shaft top. You must be very careful not to damage the shaft where the seal lip rides. If the bearing is loose, the machine must be torn down to remove the shaft from the supporting post.
If you have a front loading washing machine the oil is really the grease for the bearings that support the drum. The grease seal needs to be replaced, and if you are replacing the seal you might as well do the bearings. This is not a cheap repair because of the amount of labor involved in tearing the machine apart to replace the seal and bearings. If you don't repair the seal, eventually the grease will be washed out of the bearings and the bearings will be destroyed. You can tell if you need new bearings because when the machine is on the fast spin cycle it will sound like a jet engine taking off.
Washers normally don't have much grease in them at all....the
transmission is full of oil....which on GE washers often gets dumped
onto the floor.Remove power, tilt the washer back and check on/around/near the large
center pulley under the tranny....often the belt and pulley throw the
oil around inside the cabinet. Some of the oils they use are a synthetic oil....acts a little diff
than some other oils....sometimes if water gets into the tranny the oil
can change foamy or black due to the moisture.
Nash, your unit appears to be made by Whirlpool. (Kenmore doesn't manufacture anything, they purchase from major manufacturers and put the "kenmore" name on them)
If, as I suspect, it is made by Whirlpool... the top transmission seal is failed allowing small amounts of water to enter the tranny. The water, being heavier than oil, will displace the oil through the top of the tranny... out through a "weep" hole. The weep hole is not designed to allow fluid to escape, it's designed to allow air to enter and exit the transmission housing, compensating for the heat expansion and contraction of the lubricant that should be contained within.
Regardless of the manufacturer, you have a main drive system failure on your hands. It'll only get worse from here. Most manufacturers put a 5 year warranty on their drive-trains, you should call them immediately. If it's over 5 years old, it's a very expensive repair.
Hi, there. Get some one to fix that leak ASAP. The lack of oil will ruin your machine's transmission and/or motor. If you've noticed that your machine runs louder than it used to, then ***stop using it*** until you get the leak repaired. I kept using mine and when it stopped working I couldn't get the parts (a transmission) so I have to get a new one.
