Question about Heating & Cooling

3 Answers

I suspect my ripple control receiver type ro3 is faulty.Sometimes of late i've been left with no hot water in the morning.I assumed that the pulsing for off peak overnight didn't happen so i have been manually switching the "override/test" switch. This generally will give me hot water in a few ours then the switch/relay resets to "off".I tried this "quick fix" this morning and after about 2 minutes the relay turns off.We have had regular thunder storms in the area which could cause false "triggering" of off peak pulsing.Could this have "fried" the unit? Is this model a "lemon" ? Should I upgrade it to the 5000 model?I await your expertise. Bruiser

The thunder storm can really cause this type of problem and can fry your unit that's why its acting this way now, so i recommend to you better upgrade to the 5000 model for your convenience also...

Good evening all, This morning woke up to my home

Sounds like a faulty Tstat that's sending a low voltage signal to the contactor coil only sometimes. The high pressure cut out or the compressor's internal thermal protection could of opened, and then closed again after cooling. Make sure the condenser is clean and not obstructed.

Wont shutt off

Have you tried other settings? Try 77 or 80 and see if it cuts off then. If not, suspect a stuck relay on the control board or faulty sensor. I assume you have cleaned the condenser and air filters?

Could you please help me. Last night my Brivis evaporative cooling system didn't seem to be working very well (ie not cooling properly). I left the airconditioner on overnight and when I got up this...

You gave us good clues to help you figure this out-- THANKS!

So-- you have an evaporative AC ! Great! -- (I assume you are in a very DRY area?-- For those type of AC units don't work well here in the North East!)

However-- Evaporative AC units depend upon water flow to a mat system-- and air is drawn thru the wet mat-- raising the humidity, and getting a cooling effect from the evaporation of the water from the mat (or pad..)

Over time, parts get badly scaled up from the minerals left behind from the evaporation.
SO-- If you have HARD water, (water with lots of minerals in it..) you have frequent maintenance procedures to do faithfully-- Have these Maintenance routines been done over the years?

Likely YOU CAN FIX it, if your are not afraid of getting dirty, and can work safely where the unit is located-- (Maybe on your roof?-- or up high someplace?)

To determine if it is electrical, look for indicator lights-- any clues?
Can yo take a volt meter to the unit, and check for power inside the unit?-- and trace the power thru the on-off switch, thru the humidistat, and thru overload switches, etc>

Please make a few checks and get back with us--
I'd be happy to talk you thru the next steps-- let me know what you find with the Volt meter.

We are a bit confused by the device that you are using to heat the Hot water with- Is it an instantaneous HW heater?--
They are pressure sensitive-- Could it be, that your water pressure drops momentarily, (which causes the instantaneous heater to shut down its flame-- and you get a pulse of Cold water.)

If your hot water is a tank-- It is possible that something is cycling your hot water away-- like rinse pulses on the Washing machine)-- or your dishwasher?

Tell us more about the Rinnal Air Conditioners and what they have to do with Hot water and your SHower?

Tell us more-

My bradford white 50 gallon water heater (model m250s6ds2) will run out of hot water after a 10 minute shower. Any ideas?

Usual suspects :: faulty thermostat, or heating element going bad.

Yes you can light it with a BBQ type lighter (long enough).
If it lights and stays lit then you need to change the thermocouple (looks like a little pipe off gas valve)

In simplest terms, a thermocouple is a temperature sensor. Normally inexpensive, a thermocouple is standard on hot water tanks. If your thermocouple breaks or you feel it is not working properly, consider replacing it b?p=y23r90wnbq7oglkvtnbuhgyhrktxauzqpeoaddsf&t=18g7grtjm%2fx%3d1290445898%2fe%3d2143440281%2fr%3dacont%2fk%3d5%2fv%3d8.1%2fw%3d0%2fy%3dyahoo%2ff%3d2680761980%2fh%3dcg49imfjb250iibzzxj2zulkpsjzmjnsotb3tkjxn09nbgtwve5ivuhnewhys1r4yvv6cxbfb0fezfngiibzaxrlswq9ijq4mtmwnteiihrtdg1wpsixmjkwndq1odk4ota5njiwiia-%2fq%3d-1%2fs%3d1%2fj%3d6f060d4c&u=13gohjn6b%2fn%3df8a.bkwnpkw-%2fc%3d715481.14405591.14260180.13829426%2fd%3dlrec%2fb%3d6235626%2fv%3d1 lg.php?category_id=6&content_type=article&content_type_id=584031&key_page=1721642411054458764&site_id=1&bannerid=10089&campaignid=2945&zoneid=2&loc=1&referer=http%3a%2f%2fwww.associatedcontent.com%2farticle%2f584031%2fhow_to_change_a_thermocouple_on_your.html%3fcontent_type_id%3d584031&cb=ebe6534afe avw.php?zoneid=2&cb=1721642411054458764&source=&n=a14de4a9&slice=-1060-&dma=-0-&cty=-us-&content_type=article&content_type_id=584031&category_id=6&key_ad=1045292919&site_id=1&ad_pos=2&key_page=1721642411054458764&ac_url=http%3a%2f%2fwww.associatedcontent.com%2farticle%2f584031%2fhow_to_change_a_thermocouple_on_your.html rather than installing a new gas hot water heater.

Begin this project by shutting off the gas control knob on your hot water heater. Once you are sure that the gas is off, you should use a wrench to remove the nut that attaches the thermocouple to the gas hot water tank. This nut should appear to be securing a piece of copper tubing or other type of tubing. With the nut removed, you should also pull down on the tubing, dislodging it from the thermocouple.

Sometimes there is another nut that attaches the end of the thermocouple to the pilot bracket, if this is the case you should unscrew this nut as well. You can slide it down the tubing and keep it there until you need to replace it.

With the nuts that were holding the unit in place removed, you should be able to slide the old thermocouple out of the brackets that hold it to the hot water heater. You should then take it to a hardware or home improvement store and find a suitable replacement. Then follow these steps to install the new part and fix the hot water heater.

To change the thermocouple, you should press the end of the thermocouple into the pilot bracket as far as you can. If you had to remove a second nut to remove the old thermocouple, now is the time to replace that nut securely.

With the thermocouple in place, you should connect the lead to the control unit. Use the nut you removed in the beginning steps to secure the lead. You should then tighten it at least a quarter turn with a wench to make sure the lead is securely attached to the control unit of the gas hot water heater.

Now that the new thermocouple is installed on your gas hot water heater, turn on the gas shut off valve that you turned off earlier. You should be able to relight the pilot and the functionality of your gas hot water heater should be restored.

Modern shower valves have an "anti scald device" in them to prevent scalding from to hot water.

They come preset at 120 degrees.

Sometimes they can start to malfunction and all you get is warm, not hot water, they can also be intermittent.

This will only effect the shower valve though, not the other faucets.

We have a rheem electric hot water system which is suddenly not producing hot water. We have checked the electricity supply, the valve and both these were OK. We are at a loss to explain why this is...

Electric water heater are designed with two elements for heating the water. The upper element is what is called the quick recovery element which is control by a thermostat. The thermostat has a reset button that will open in an over temperature situation. If the reset is NOT tripped it is possible that the upper element or thermostat has failed. Until the upper element is satisfied ( up to set temperature) the lower element does not get any power through the circuit.
