I have a samsung ht-x40 dvd home theater system that powers up briefly showing "hello" display, then the function it's on. Immediatly after that the display comes up saying "protection" and the unit immediatly powers down. I have pulled the electrical plug and replaced it into a different outlet, and even removed all the cable from the back and it continues to do this. Any help would be greatly appreicated! THANK YOU!

Check the components near the fan in the back to see if any caps are fried (looks like it exploded)causing the protection circuit to come on if this is fine then check the fan to see if it if freely moving.

Display reads OPEN LOCK when I try to open dvd tray.

Samsung Home Theater Systems have a Dealer Lock or Tray Lock Function that prevents the disc tray from being opened.
There are four procedures for turning off the Dealer Lock function. Try one, then the other, to see which works on your system.
Unlocking Procedure 1 To turn off the Dealer Lock function, follow these steps:
  1. Turn on your Home Theater System.
  2. Press the Stop button on the front panel and the Power button on the remote control simultaneously for four seconds.
Note: Repeating the two steps above turns the dealer lock on again.
Unlocking Procedure 2 To turn off the Dealer Lock function, follow these steps
  1. Turn on your Home Theater System.
  2. Press and hold the Function button on the front panel for 3 seconds. The display shows the word Unlock.
Note: Repeating the two steps above turns the dealer lock on again.
Unlocking Procedure 3 To turn off the Dealer Lock function, follow these steps
  1. Turn on your Home Theater System.
  2. Press and hold the Open/Close button on the DVD player on the front panel for more than 4 seconds.
Note: Repeating the two steps above turns Dealer Lock on again.
Unlocking Procedure 4 To turn off the Dealer Lock function, follow these steps
  1. Using the HTS remote press the Menu button + 712, and the HTS will display CAN OPEN.
The Dealer Lock feature is mainly used by retailers to ensure that the display discs are not removed. However, parents of young children may find this feature very useful as well.

I got ahtx-40 and after running for a while it displays protection and the power goes off. helppppppp!!!!!

I have the same HT-X40 home theater as you do, and my problem seems similar to yours. It'srelated to overheating. First check the fan and air flow from it. Ifit's OK, the problem can be inside the unit. In my case one of theoutput filter capacitors got broken - it had a crack on its body.Replacement of the capacitor fixed the shutdown on protection.
Anotherquestion is what damaged the cap. Preliminary I consider placement ofthe capacitors as a possible problem - they are too close to the outputinductors which can get relatively hot even at normal workingcondition.
