'unable to save file. the system cannot find the path specified'

I love my mp810 - but as i was trying to scan something today an error popped up saying ' unable to save file. the system cannot find the path specified'
i have restarted and tried different usb ports - and i have tried scanning and saving directly to my pc, and saving as a pdf and tried scanning and opening with a specified application, but all of the error messages are the same.
please help me

I have a Canon MP830 with the same problem. After replacing the hard drive with everything backed up, after it scans I get the same error message: " Unable to save file. The system cannot find the path specified".
Where do you look to see where the scanned file is saved to?

I have a a Canon MX850 with exactly the same issue.
I reinstalled my whole system on a new hard drive, which seems to have confused the software. And unfortunately when I get into the navigator software the preferences selection in the File menu is greyed out (unable to access it). I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.5.

I have an mp830 and it was scanning and saving the files just fine unitl yesterday. Now it says that it can't communicate with the computer. I've tried 4 different USB ports on my docking station, plug it directly into my laptop, restarted my computer, uninstalled the cannon drivers and reinstalled them. Nothing helps. It prints and copies just fine. As usual, my extended warranty expired 2 months ago. So, now what do I do?

same thing for me with a mx7600.
the path specified in the preferences is correct.
if i ask to not save automatically, it works.
if i ask to save  automatically, i have the error message.

it happened after i had to archive reinstall of macosx.
there is probably a old config file that refers to the previous installation.
    it is bloody annoying !!

Re Solution #1:  yes, we see that, but the problem remains that said dated subdirectory doesn't exist and the software isn't creating it

Had this same problem and just fixed it. You need to actually change the button settings in Navigator. Open MP navigator and choose One-Click, then click Button Settings. You can choose a new save destination from here. Even though you are using the software instead of the button on the device, it works.

1. Rename ~/Pictures/MP\ Navigator to have no space in the name
2. Poke around the preferences and the button preferences in MP Navigator and select the directory with the new, space-free name
3.?
4. Profit!
It seems likely to me that Canon's stuff isn't properly escaping the space in the name at some point, so this works around that.

The printer will store it's scanned images as specified in the Canon MP Navigator software. If you open MP Navigator and click preferences you will see whare scanned images are stored, it's usually a dated subfolder in my documents.

Make sure you click the second tab marked "scanner button settings" and change the save settings from "automatically.." to "open the save dialog"
For some reason the automatic filename became "IMGles!!" instead of IMG.

Please check the location where the file saved by your Scanner and note down its size.

Also as you mentioned in your next reply, you need to go for check Device manager. Reinstall the drivers.

Why am I getting the message "the system cannot find the path specified" when trying to scan?

Hi Tania,
You receive this notice when the drive and folder the scanner is configured to save the scan is missing. You can correct this by telling the computer where to save the scan. follow this simple steps.

  • On your computer desktop, click Start - open Devices and Printers -
  • Right-click on the printer/ scanner icon and select scan options. Assign a destination folder for saving your new scans.

You have to use the "save as" to specify a new name. I am assuming that you are doing that rather than a plain "save" and trying to change the name.

Also consider if you have a watermark or some sort of copy protection turned on. That MIGHT preclude saving under different name..

Check the location where you are directing the scanner/computer to store the scanned image. If it is full, obviously it cant store. Change the location where there is space.

MP600 Canner quit working

It sounds like a folder on your hard drive got renamed or moved/deleted. Open your Applications folder and look for a folder named Canon Utilities. Open the MP Navigator 3.0 file. Click on the Preferences button in the lower right corner. Click on the "Color Button" (or "Black Button") tab, and select the "Save to PC" option for "Event:". Verify that the folder indicated next to "Save in:" exists (this is the 'path specified' that the advisory message is referring to). If not, change it to a location that exists on your computer.
