you can hear the drive, fan etc working, power light is on. Screen stays black, no messages and I have not tried an external monitor.

    Hi Mark

I've no idea what it may be. I can't plug the laptop into an external monitor unfortunately.

Everything sounds as if it is running ok, just nothing on the screen. It has been cutting out now and again for a while before this complete not working happened.

    Thanks for your help

    Gary

Bearing in mind its less than a year old I'd return the laptop under its warranty...could be one of a number of problems
1 loose cable
2 video card problem
3 inverter problem
Either way needs to be looked at by professional

My 13 year old son laptop need be reset like new

There are a couple possible solutions to your problem. If the computer will still turn on and load windows, and I assume you are using Windows XP, you can try doing a system restore. To do this, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and select System Restore. If system restore is enabled, you should be able to choose a date in the past when the laptop was working properly and restore the computer to that date. If you want to completely reload windows, you will need a Windows XP installation disc. Load the disc in the CD or DVD player and reboot the computer. You should see a screen asking you to press any key to boot from CD, go ahead and press Enter. You will now enter setup where you can reformat the hard drive and reload windows XP. Follow the on-screen instructions to delete any old partitions, and then create a new partition and format it using NTFS. The windows XP installation will continue after the hard drive is formatted. If, when you reboot the computer with the installation disc in the drive, you are not prompted to boot from CD, you may need to reboot and press F2 or F12 to change the boot selection to the CD or DVD drive so it will load the CD first before it tries to load your original Windows installation.

If your computer is still within warranty, you have an option to request for a recovery cd from Asus which you can use to reinstall your OS. The only thing is, if you use the cd it will wipe out everything on your computer as it will do a clean installation of your OS. Just make sure you have a back up of your files before you use the recovery cd

My 0xc000000c "Restore Failed" prompt seemed to be the result of disk surface damage on the restore disk. After burning the restore disk to a new disk, the restore proceeded normally. Try making a copy of the original restore disk to a known good blank disk.

0xd000001e and subsequent black screen

The easiest way is to hit F10 right after the Acer splash screen. This will take you into recovery mode on the laptop. Then just do the Reset to Factory Default. This will put everything back to the way it was when you purchase the laptop. It does this from the recovery partition.

Hi

Restart the system and keep tapping on F8 to access the Advanced option - Select the safe mode with command prompt
type cd restore - Press enter key
type rstrui.exe - press enter key
restore it to the back as when the system is working fine.

Blank Screen

Hi,

If you can hear your windows loading but no display, try plug-in an external Monitory on your Laptop. If you can see the display on the screen with this monitor then maybe your LCD or Inverter is broken, or try turning on/off the switch for External Monitor and LCD Display on your keyboard. Usually by holding the "FN" key on your keyboard and look for the LCD/VGA icon on your keys then press it.
