ANY SUGGESTIONS . THANKS . LEE
Haven't found answer to that, but there is a remote contol specifically for your unit now on EBAY at http://cgi.ebay.com/SHARP-VCR-RRMCGO173AJSA-Remote-Control_W0QQitemZ350117240995QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116. The whole thing is under $10 including shipping. If nothing else, copy the model # of the remote and you might be able to find it cheaper someplace else.

The menu button on the front will get you to options to set the timer for recording movies automatically, change the language, set the stations, etc., but not to set the tape speed. That has to be done via the remote. OR - if you can get into the menu, you can record 1 minute of video, and set the tape speed for that recording. That, then becomes the tape speed, until the unit is unplugged.
Use contact cleaner (radio shack, or auto parts store), to clean the menu button, use the included red tube and spray in the crevice around the button and the case, and working the button many times until it makes contact.

a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

I make no claim to being any kind of an expert techie but it sounds to me like there are one or more loose or badly worn parts inside your machine. If you haven't had a look at the innards, try that. Loose things can usually be re-secured and, sometimes, worn parts can be replaced.
