Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I have a Gateway GT5026E with Microsoft Windows XP-SP2 Home Addition. I have a rouge anti-spyware program, PC Protection Center 2008, that is holding my computer hostage! It's been on my PC for nearly 2 weeks and I haven't been able to get rid of it. It has turned off my Norton protection and my Task Manager. There is is a long list of problems associated with this program. One of which prevents me from searching the Internet for help because it keeps interupting my searches. It also interupts my typing to you! What information do you need from me to make it easier to solve this problem? I have gone through numerous pages of directions, found on the Internet, to get rid of it. Some lead to nowhere and others are too complicated for me to understand. 1. Since you are having problems using the Internet on your PC, go to a friend's PC and print this out and download the removal utility to a flash drive or disk.
  2. Print out these instructions as we will need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

  3. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-malware, or mbam, from the following location and save it to your desktop:

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe

  4. Once downloaded, close all programs and Windows on your computer, including this one.

  5. Double-click on the icon on your desktop named Download_mbam-setup.exe. This will start the installation of mbam onto your computer.

  6. When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing, make sure you leave both the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-malware checked. Then click on the Finish button.

  7. mbam will now automatically start and you will see a message stating that you should update the program before performing a scan. As mbam will automatically update itself after the install, you can press the OK button to close that box and you will now be at the main program.
  8. On the Scanner tab, make sure the the Perform quick scan option is selected and then click on the Scan button to start scanning your computer for PC Protection Center 2008 related files.

  9. mbam will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while, so we suggest you go and do something else and periodically check on the status of the scan.
  10. When the scan is finished a message box will appear ,You should click on the OK button to close the message box and continue with the PCProtection Center 2008 removal process.

  11. You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on the Show Results button.

  12. A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown .
  13. You should now click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware. mbam will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine. When removing the files, mbam may require a reboot in order to remove some of them. If it displays a message stating that it needs to reboot, please allow it to do so. Once your computer has rebooted, and you are logged in, please continue with the rest of the steps.

  14. When mbam has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

  15. You can now exit the mbam program.
copy and paste the complete link into your browser.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
    Thanks, Joe

You need to download and Install a Program called Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
You can get it from here. http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Just allow it to do a Full System Scan (Could take several hours depending on size of hard drive / speed of proccessor.) but it's guaranteed that it will find and remove it for you.

Just make sure that you turn off System Restore, before you delete the malware it finds. Then turn it back on, once it's removed.

In a situation like this it's most likely you have come across a virus, whether it be a trojen, worm, ect. Backup all your important files from your computer, documents, pictures, movies, music. Once this is done, reinstall your copy of Windows XP, and make sure you have a good anitvirus, malware, and spyware programs I recommend using either Avira Anti-Virus or AVG for virus protection, Malware Bytes for malware, and Super Anti Spyware for spyware, all of which can be obtained freely. You can find these programs on www.filehippo.com Just search for them, and you can download them from this site. Install your protection after installing XP, then run a scan on your backup data before you put it back onto the computer, just in case any of these files may be infected!

Secure Your Windows PC For Free

With the online holiday buying season upon us, the most important thing to remember is computer security. Each day millions of threats cycle through the Internet, most of which harm computers and home networks. These threats hunt for credit card numbers, social security numbers, and other personal information and can be used against you in the form of identity theft. Here are some tips to help secure your PC and keep your information safe and locked down.

1. Windows Update
This is the number one reason computers fall victim to malicious threats (viruses, spyware, etc.) is not updating the Windows operating system. During the spring of 2009, the virus named "conficker" targeted computers that were not fully updated. To update the Windows, first the computer needs to be connected to the Internet, whether it would be wired or wireless network connection. Then go to Start > Programs > Windows Update. Let Widows Update complete and afterward your computer will be up-to-date.

2. Anti-Virus Program
Some sort of anti-virus software should be the bare minimum for computer security. Not having protection can increase the chances of viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, and identity theft. There are some free as well as paid versions, but for basic web surfing and email free versions will work just fine. Here are some recommended free anti-virus programs.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
Avira Anti-Vir
Avast Home Edition
Microsoft Security Essentials

3. Firewall
A firewall blocks incoming web traffic not requested by the computer user. Firewalls can prevent malware from entering the computer thus fewer viruses and spyware. A great, free firewall program called Comodo can protect your PC and the user can select various security levels for added protection.

4. Windows Defender
Windows Defender is spyware program from Microsoft that is built in to Windows Vista and Windows 7 and as a download for Windows XP, which can be found here. Defender offers protection from spyware, pop-ups, and slow performance. To access Windows Defender, go to Start > Programs > Windows Defender then click the scan button at the top of the window and then remove the threats when complete. Windows Defender is a simple solution to increase computer performance.

5. Encryption
Encryption continues to be a major issue in protecting computer data if it fell into the wrong hands. Many users have huge amounts of information about themselves on their computer including pictures, internet history, email messages, contacts, login usernames and passwords, and much much more. What encryption does is locks the files with a series of numbers and letters making impossible to decode or read for that matter. But the user can read the files with a key and a password which unlocks the files that were encrypted. I recommend using TrueCrypt for encrypting files and works with all versions of Windows.

As for all security software, plan on allowing, at minimum, running all the security programs (anti-virus, firewall, Defender, and more) each week to make sure the computer is protected. It's very easy to secure computers and with a few clicks you even can make it automatic.

If questions arise or need assistance installing or running any of the programs mention above, please feel free to contact me. I will be happy to assist you in any way.
