Question about Olevia LT42HVi 42 in. LCD Television

42" Olevia LCD Screen going very dark. Unable to control bright.

I have a three year old Olevia 42" LCD TV. The screen has been going progressively darker and is now almost unviewable. The onscreen menu controlling the video options is not adjustable. When I try to adjust the brightness, the progress bar bounces back and forth between 42 and 45. The manufacturer states that this set does not allow a backlight bulb replacement without replacing the entire panel which costs over $900. (Not worth the money). If the problem coul be fixed with a "main board" replacement at $200 I would fix. Is this three year old television repairable without spending over $1,100?

Does this problem sound like it could be fixed with a simple main board replacement?

  • djbyram Dec 07, 2008

Thank You for responding. Olevia tech support states that they do not sell the backlight bulb seperately and that it is incorportatd into the panel. Other LCD's I've looked at all sell the backlight seperately. Please recommend a cheaper solution. $300 to $400 is in the ballpark. $1,000 is way over the top.

If the on screen bar jumps around when you try to adjust the brightness, I believe the problem is in the main board not the backlight. Any backlight issues shouldn't effect your menus functionality whatsoever. You main board is likely sending bad data causing the problem. Does the menu malfunction on any other adjusments? Try rebooting the set (unplug for 2 minutes) to reset the microprocessor.

Hi
Turn off the the OPC feature in the Menu. If that doesnt help, what youre seeing is most likely the Advanced Dynamic Contrast going to work. In layman's terms, it automatically adjusts the contrast depending on the video signal it is receiving. If you want to disable this, change the AV settings to "User" (button underneath the bottom door on the sharp remote)

You should go for checking the Main board Power supply board for any loose or worn out ciruit, and if require replacing it.
I would suggest, it is better to purchase a new one instead of going it repair.

I would not be certain that the entire panel needs replacing but there could be low power getting to the back light inverter board and that is why the image is getting darker due to the lower power provided by the power supply.
If you can use a multimeter to check the 24 volts from the power supply to the back light inverter, you might be able to see if the power supply is defective.
Let me know if you require further assistance.

You might want to check this website to see if they can find the parts for your TV.

You can also look for the parts by part number because other TV manufacturers might be using the same.

You will need to have the backlight for the LCD replaced, LCD's don't emmit any light of there own, this is what the backlight does, it won't cost even close to $1,000, at most $300

Hi,
I'm sorry but nothing can be done to fix the problem because it is defect of lcd panel (screen) that will be replaced but it would cost you approx new tv price so new tv is better choice instead of lcd panel replacement in this tv.
Again, I feel sorry for the bad news.

My Vizio LCD TV screen fades to dark. Sound stays on.

I w having this same issue when watching a Blu-Ray disc. I found it to be dependent upon what picture mode the TV was set to. By this I mean certain picture modes would cause the TV to dim during dark scenes of a movie. Changing the picture mode helped a lot.

Screen wont cut on but audio works

There are two places to look for the problems, the backlight inverter board and the power supply. Look at the power supply first since it is easier to get to, look for burnt parts, bad capacitors, etc.

The TV will not let you set brightness, contrast, color or tint in the preset modes like Vivid, Movie, Standard etc. Look for a mode that says custom, user etc..
