    way to align-------

From the front panel (Macintosh and Windows)
Press MENU or SETUP (depending on the model).
Press the right ARROW repeatedly until the display window reads Maintenance.
    Press ENTER.
Press the right ARROW repeatedly until the display window reads Align Print Cartridges.
Press ENTER. The unit will begin the alignment process and the display window will read Printing Alignment Page
Verify that the alignment was successful after the page is complete.
From the Director screen (Windows and HP Officejet all-in-one product only)
Open the Director Screen in one of the following ways:
From the desktop, double-click the HP all-in-one product icon.
Click Start , click Programs , click HP all-in-one folder, and then click HP Director .
From the Director Screen, click Settings , and then click Maintenance .
Click the Align print cartridges option. A window will appear with information about aligning the print cartridges.
Click Align . The unit will begin the alignment process and the display window will read Printing Alignment Page.
Check the alignment page when it is completed.
If all of the alignment tasks have green checkmarks beside them, click OK to close the alignment window.
From the HP Toolbox (Windows and HP Officejet all-in-one product only)
Click Start , click Programs , and then click the HP all-in-one product folder.
    Click HP Toolbox .
From the HP Toolbox Print Services menu, click Align the Print Cartridges . A window will appear with information about aligning the print cartridges.
Click Align . The unit will begin the alignment process and the display window will read Printing Alignment Page
Check the alignment page when it is completed.
If all of the alignment tasks have green checkmarks beside them, click OK to close the alignment window.
    If the alignment fails
If the alignment process fails, the unit will either display the message Alignment Failed, Please Try Again or it will return to the message, Press Enter to Align Cartridges. The alignment process may also terminate prematurely.
    Sensor failure
Look into the paper output tray of the unit as the alignment page is printing; a blue light should be visible periodically. If this light is not present, the unit will not be able to align and will require service.
A blank page is ejected immediately
If a blank page ejects immediately without the unit attempting to print, the unit will require service. Other errors that may occur are a Paper Mismatch or a Paper too Narrow error message. A damaged paper-type sensor lens causes this error.
    Ink related failures
If a problem exists with the cartridge and ink is not printed on the page, the alignment process will fail. NOTE: Turn on the power to access the ink cartridges. This allows the carriage to move to the center when the access door is opened. Unplug the power cord before proceeding to the cleaning steps below.

    Check the following:
Verify that the cartridge is not out of ink, including all three colors in the tri-color cartridge. The alignment page should look like Figure 1, including the three bands of color (cyan, magenta and yellow) toward the bottom. Another test is making a color copy of a page with various colors and black. Replace the ink cartridge if either the black or the color cartridges are not printing correctly.
If this is a new ink cartridge, verify that the blue tape covering the nozzles has been removed. Do not remove the copper flexible circuit with the electrical contact points. If no tape is present, try reinserting the original cartridge and performing the alignment process before trying the new cartridge again.
If the unit still will not print, remove and reinsert both ink cartridges. Verify that the cartridges are the correct part numbers for this model.WARNING: To avoid the risk of electrical shock or damage to the unit, unplug the power cord before continuing with the cleaning steps below.

Clean the ink cartridge. The ink cartridge nozzles may be clogged, or the electrical contacts may have something on them that interferes with the electrical connection. If the ink nozzles are clogged, the print may be faded or have white lines. Use the following steps to clean the ink cartridge:
Clean the cartridge with a cotton swab or clean cloth slightly dampened with distilled, filtered, or bottled water. Unfiltered water may contain contaminants that can damage the print cartridges.
Clean the areas on either side of the nozzle plate (Figure 2, call-out 2).
Only clean the nozzle plate (Figure 2, call-out 1) as a last resort to recover the cartridge. Place the damp cotton swab on the very bottom of the ink cartridge over the nozzle plate (the shiny rectangle). Remove any ink or dirt from the bottom of the ink cartridge. Do not touch the nozzle plate with anything other than the cotton swab.
Clean the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge (Figure 2, call-out 3) with a soft clean cloth lightly dampened with distilled, filtered, or bottled water. The ink cartridge ships with a protective coating on the contacts that may need to be removed to restore proper operation.
Inside the HP all-in-one product, clean the contact points inside the print carriage (the cartridge holder) with a soft clean cloth lightly dampened with distilled, filtered, or bottled water. Allow them to dry for at least five minutes before reinserting the cartridge(s) to avoid damaging the HP product.
    Figure 2: Cleaning the cartridge

    1- The nozzle plate
2- Areas to be cleaned to remove ink or dirt
    3- Cartridge electrical contacts
The ink cartridge may be defective; replace the ink cartridge.
If the issue is still unresolved, replace the ink cartridge that was not previously replaced and try again.
The problem still exists after try all the troubleshooting steps
If the print alignment continues to fail, there may be a problem with the unit. This may occur after inserting the wrong ink cartridge. Contact HP technical support for additional assistance.

Just put in a new black cartridge and it wont print anything. Keeps saying alignment problem and prints a bunch of tourquoise designs in stripes. got the alignment note to go away but still nothing on...

It could be that one of your cartridges are not seated well in the carrier or one of your cartridges are faulty or just needs cleaning:
  1. Open the printer cover.
  2. Remove both cartridges from the printer.
  3. Close the printer cover.
  4. Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it.
  5. When the printer turns on, re-insert one cartridge first. Close the cover.
  6. Check for any errors.
  7. If no error appears, re-insert the other cartridge.
  8. Replace whichever cartridge is causing the error to appear. Or you could also insert a different known working cartridge to determine if the other is faulty.

Need help: our HP officejet v40 will not print.

I have to ask this question of you, just to make sure this is not an issue. Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.
If you are using factory new cartridges, then please call the manufacturers Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges

Have changed the black ink in the printer as it was displaying error code 4. It is now displaying error code 5! What does this mean. What should I do?

Hi there,
Error E5.
Cause : The FINE Cartridge may not be installed properly or the Cartridge may not be the compatible with the machine.
Action : Install the appropriate FINE Cartridge. If the lines are misaligned or the resulting output is not satisfactory, carry out the FINE cartridge Alignment.

Replacing A FINE Cartridge.
When replacing a FINE Cartridge, check the model number very carefully.

The machine will not print properly if the wrong FINE Cartridge is used, or installed incorrectly.

Black : PG-40 Black
Color : CL-41 Color

The FINE Cartridge PG-50 Black (High-Yield) and CL-51 Color (High Yield) are also compatible with this machine.

Replacing A FINE Cartridge
When a FINE Cartridge runs out of ink, replace it using the following steps.
1) Ensure that the machine is turned ON, and then open the Scanning Unit. The FINE Cartridge Holder moves to the left.
Pull the Scanning Unit Support down into place.

2) Remove the empty FINE Cartridge.
a) Push the FINE Cartridge carefully to avoid staining your clothes or the surrounding work area.
b) Remove the FINE Cartridge.
Important : * Handle FINE Cartridges carefullu to avoid staining your clothes or the surrounding work area.
*Discard empty FINE Cartridges according to local laws and disposal regulations.
Caution : Do not touch the transparent film, film cable, ink absorber (sponge part) or any metal parts.

3) Prepare a replacement FINE Cartridge.
Unpack a new FINE Cartridge and remove the Protective Tape.
Important : * Do not reattach the Protective Tape once you have removed it,
* Handle the removed Protective Tape carefully to avoid getting your hands dirty or staining the surrounding work area once you have removed it.
* Once the Protective Tape is removed, do not touch the gold terminals of the FINE Cartridge or its nozzles. The machine may not print out properly if you touch the terminals.

4) Insert the new FINE Cartridge.
Black FINE Cartridge should be installed into the left holder and Color FINE Cartridge should go into the right holder.
a) Insert a new FINE Cartridge on a slight tilt.
b) Push the FINE Cartridge up until it clicks into place.

5) Close the Scanning Unit.
Lift the Scanning Unit slightly and put the Scanning Unit Support back to its original position,
Then close the Scanning Unit.
The FINE Cartridge Holder moves to the right.
Note : IF the straight line is misaligned or the FINE Cartridge position is misaligned, align the FINE Cartridge position.
Important :
* To maintain optimal print quality, we recommend that you use Canon brand FINE Cartridge. Replenishing ink only is also not recommended.
* Replace the FINE Cartridge runs out of ink, replace the FINE Cartridge with a new one immediately. If you replace it with the FINE Cartridge that has previously been removed, the machine may not print properly due to clogged FINE Cartridge nozzles. Furthermore, the Low Ink Warning dialog box which advices when to exchange the FINE Cartridge will be inaccurate.
* To maintain optimal print quality, use up all the ink in the FINE Cartridge within six months of its first use. (We recommend that you note the date that the FINE Cartridge was installed in the machine.)
* Color ink consumption may occur even when black-and- white or gray-scale printing specified.
Color ink is consumed during Cartridge cleaning, which is necessary to maintain the machine's capabilities.

Aligning The FINE Cartridge
If ruled lines are misaligned or a printout is unsatisfactory, FINE Cartridge Alignment is required,

* Aligning the FINE Cartridge
1) Press [Maintainance] repeatedly until <P> appears.

2) Press [Black] or [Color].
The machine prints the head alignment sheet.

3) Beginning from Column A on the printout, enter checkmarks in the patterns that have the most solid image.

4) Load the checked sheet on the Platen Glass.
When loading the checked sheet, place the front side down, and align the upper left corner of the sheet with the alignment mark on the lower right corner of the Platen Glass.

5) Press [Maintainance] repeatedly until <U> appears.

6) Press [Black] or [Color].
The machine scans the pattern and aligns the FINE Cartridge automatically.
Note : If you select <L> in step 1, the machine prints the current FINE Cartridge Alignment setting.

Hope this helps.
Please rate my response
Thanks.
Have a good day.

Failure to align cartidge after inserting new one

It could well be that your scanner function is broken but hoepfully it is just malfunctioning, I would recommend trying to print a troubleshooting page from the system's menu to see if it lists any error codes regarding the scanner.

Continually says align print cartridges

My guess is that the color cartridge is either defective or not inserted correctly. I have a 6110 and know that inserting a print cartridge is a little tricky. If it isn't completely inserted and the top latch fastened correctly, the cartridge either won't work or produce errors.

Try reseating the color cartridge so it's inserted in exactly the same way as the black cartridge and run a print job again.

Open the following web page and go to Step three to see the instructions for cleaning the electronic contacts on the cartridge and print carriage.

Ink Cartridge Alignment Fails

Those seem the most likely causes and solutions to me. Good luck.

I have a hpdeskjet f2180 and need to change the ink cartridges. How do I get to the cartridges to change them !

Installing print cartridges
  1. Make sure the HP All-in-One is on. CAUTION: If the HP All-in-One is off when you open the print cartridge door to access the print cartridges, the HP All-in-One will not release the cartridges for changing. You might damage the HP All-in-One if the print cartridges are not docked safely when you try to remove them.
  2. Open the print cartridge door. Figure 1: Opening the print cartridge door c00906461.jpg Make sure the print carriage moves to the center. If it does not move to the center, turn the device off and then turn it back on again.
  3. Remove the tape from both cartridges. Figure 2: Removing the tape from a cartridge c00651128.gif CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or re-tape the cartridges. Figure 3: Copper-colored contacts c00651129.gif
  4. Hold the cartridges with the HP logo on top.
  5. Insert the tri-color cartridge in the left cartridge slot and the black cartridge in the right cartridge slot. Figure 4: Carriage slots c00853116.jpg Figure 5: Inserting the tri-color cartridge in the left slot c00853117.jpg
  6. Make sure you push the cartridges in firmly until they snap into place. Figure 6: Pushing the cartridge in firmly c00853118.jpg Figure 7: Tri-color cartridge and black cartridge correctly installed c00853119.jpg
  7. Close the print cartridge door. Figure 8: Closing the print cartridge door c00906462.jpg
Aligning print cartridges The HP All-in-One prompts you to align cartridges every time you install or replace a print cartridge. You can also align the print cartridges at any time from the control panel or by using the software you installed with the HP All-in-One. Aligning the print cartridges ensures high-quality output. NOTE: If you remove and reinstall the same print cartridge, the HP All-in-One will not prompt you to align the print cartridges. The HP All-in-One remembers the alignment values for that print cartridge, so you do not need to realign the print cartridges. To align newly installed print cartridges
  1. Make sure you have letter or A4 unused plain white paper loaded in the input tray. The HP All-in-One prints a print cartridge alignment sheet. NOTE: If you have colored paper loaded in the input tray when you align the print cartridges, the alignment will fail. Load unused plain white paper into the input tray, and then try the alignment again.
  2. Load the print cartridge alignment sheet print side down on the left front corner of the glass with the top of the page to the left. Figure 9: Loading the alignment sheet c00906464.jpg
  3. Press the Scan (c00906465.jpg ) button. The HP All-in-One aligns the print cartridges. Recycle or discard the print cartridge alignment sheet.

Ink Cartridge Alignment

On alignment sheet, do you see a line of yellow blocks?
And on next line do you see alternate block and yellow blocks?

(Without these, alignment fails)

If not, change the colour cartridge, re-print the page and repeat alignment.

Good luck...
