Toshiba Satellite A50 (A55) Dim screen

I have a satellite A50 with a dim screen. I have changed/tried a different invertor and no luck. I was told that it might be, for a lack of a better term, the metal bar/strip that has the on/off button on it. It seems to have a fuse or something in one corner. Just not sure how to test it from here. Any help would be appreciated. I can not seem to find a service manual or parts list to describe that part.

Yes I did change out the whole inverter. When it is plugged into an external monitor I get a picture on the external. I can have them both on but the laptop is dim and the external is fine. The piece that I was describing is the switch board. Just found a manual that listed it.

    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes I changed out the whole inverter. When I plug it in to an external monitor I get a picture. I can have both the laptop and external monitor on and get a pciture on the external but the laptop stays dim. I found the description of the other part, it is a switch board or membrane switch. Just found a manual that listed it. Again there seems to be a fuse or something in one corner and I do not know how to test the switch.

The fuse you are referring to is probably a photodiode. It is probably gone bad. This bad diode is telling computer that the lid is closed and hence the screen is dimmed out.

The other day I switched on my Satellite A55-S1063 and got a redish and dim screen. I don't know if I have to replace just the backlight or also the inverter. I would appreciate some help.

If it's reddish then the tube is dimming - it's like a regular florescent tube that doesn't light up fully. In extreme rare cases (I've seen one such case in the past 20 years) it's the inverter. Inverters you can buy on eBay for around $3. I'd try that first. More than likely you need a new tube, and it's a HUGE operation to replace one. Best bet? Go to eBay and buy a used screen and replace it. If you shop hard enough you oughta be able to get one for under $30; if you want it replaced right away you'll always pay a bit more.

Toshiba tecra a2 screen backlight problem the is screen not lighting up at all but in bright daylight fully functioning screen can be seen could this be the lcd inverter and how difficult is it to replace

screen not lighting up is either the screen inverter or a broken tube inside the screen. Tubes don't break by themselves so a dim screen usually comes after a transport or a drop. I would replace the inverter first (just cause it's easy and cheap). eBay's a good source for inverters and screens and you ought not pay more than $5 for a used inverter and anything more than $30 for a used screeen would be considered tourist price. Tecra A2's are rare, but it's the same as the more popular Satellite A55's. Its screen should be a 15" XGA and would be the same screen as many other Toshiba Satellite models (A10, A15, A40, A45, A55) and Satellite Pro models (M10, M15), to name a few.

In my opinion, dim screens are 98% broken tubes and 2% inverters.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A55-S1063 the scrren is dim but I can still see using a flashlight. I have had the back light replaced once it worked great for about 2 weeks and then went back to being very...

Hello !

Since the screen is dim, the display's inverter board needs to be replaced.

If you were experiencing discoloration in the screen (pinkish lower light hues) before it failed, that would indicate a CCFL backlight issue. If the screen suddenly went dim on you rather than a slow degradation, the inverter would be indicated.

Hope this helps.

Try to update the wireless driver, also update the firmware (BIOS). it will fix your problem, it is software conflict.

Monitor is dim

Sounds like your inverter is failing. The inverter takes the dc power from the battery and charger and converts to high voltage AC current for the backlight lamp inside the screen. When the inverter starts to fail, the display will sometimes blink, dim out over time, flash just get dark and stay that way.
