Question about Onkyo TX-SR705 Receiver

Dialog track not playing for 5.1 DVD with Onkyo TX-SR705 AVR

This is a continuation Problem Statement. Prior posting included two problems. The problem with a "dead" center speaker has been solved. Following is from the original problem statement and comments responding to suggestions.
Connecting a DVD player with Component Video, and Coax Digital Audio to Onkyo TX-SR705 AVR. Playing a 5.1 DVD with 5.1 speaker configuration. Video is fine. Audio is not. Dialog track only present when listening mode setting is on "stereo", "all channel stereo", and "mono movie". Dialog track is missing when mode setting is on "Dolby D", "THx", and several other listening modes that generate 5.1 sound. The music, ambient & background sounds and effects are present when setting at modes for 5.1, but dialog is silent.

Comment posted on Dec 03, 2008 The two solutions that have been posted to this problem are not correct. Speaker cables are secure, the speaker configuration is correct, the firmware is current (according to the AVS postings).
Does anyone know how a hardware malfunction could cause the dialog drop-out? Comment posted on Dec 03, 2008 To clarify (possibly):

The "front" and "surround" speakers are configured correctly in the SR705 set-up. The audio is correct when the listening mode in the 705 is set for "stereo" or "all channel stereo". But when the listening mode is set for any of the 5.1 options, the dialog channel of the 5.1 coding is missing. Only the ambient sound and sound effects are present. The sound effects (eg. a passing auto) move from speaker to speaker correctly. This is true for both Dolby and DTS coding in the DVD.

This is my first experience that shows the sound in 5.1 coding to be seperated into components. But I am sure that there are many other things I don't know. Comment posted on Dec 03, 2008 The speakers are connected to the (amplified) output of the Onkyo TX-SR705 AVR. And the manual "speaker configuration" setting is correct for the speakers. Comment posted on Dec 03, 2008 The AVR is connected to an LCD monitor with an HDMI cable. The "HDMI audio" setting is "OFF" (part of the TX-SR705 setup). No change with "HDMI audio: ON".

Any other ideas? Comment posted on Dec 03, 2008 I have manually setup the speaker configuration--several times.

I have used several source DVDs, each with Dolby 5.1 coding, and one with DTS coding. All with the same result. Comment posted on Dec 03, 2008 The setup is built around an Onkyo TX-SR705 receiver. Sony DVD connected to the AVR with component video and digital coax cable. LCD monitor connected via an HDMI cable with audio "off". Polk Monitor speakers connected with Belden speaker wire, connections checked and rechecked--5.1 configuration.

Other sources connected to the AVR include phono & cd, both work fine in 2.1 stereo.

I have a DVD with both Dolby and DTS coding (movie video). The audio select option on the video offers choice of Dolby 5.1 and DTS 5.1. The audio problem of lost dialog in 5.1 playback is the same for each coding. The AVR automatically uses the appropriate listening mode for each selection one the DVD.

Since there is no dialog coming from the Front L or R speakers, I don't see how spatial seperation can be achieved L and R in the dialog using only the Center speaker. But it would not be the only time I have been wrong.

Anyway, I accept your solution, and have taken the AVR to an Onkyo repair center. Their tech had never encountered the dialog issue. We will see.

    Thanks.

There should be a test mode on the receiver that will generate white noise to each speaker. If you do not hear white noise out of the center speaker, the problem is the center channel amp IC.

Let us know.

It would appear that you were not able to view my comment in your initial problem. A repost below:

One down, amplifier for center speaker of the Onkyo TX-SR705 is defective.

2nd issue, Dialog track is missing when setting on "Dolb D", "THx", and several other modes that generate 5.1 sound. Again the Center Speaker. Pls see p.20 of the manual:

  • "This speaker enhances the front left and right speakers, making sound movements distinct and providing a full sound image. In movies it’s used mainly for dialog."

Hello,

Have you tried adjusting the DVD audio options in the DVD player itself? It soumds like a conflict between the Receiver audio config and the dvd player config.

contact onkyo and ask for a disc that you use threw the cd player via a toslink . The disc will upgrade your avr ,thus overwriting any problems you had. My tx-sr705 had an issue with popping during blu ray playback while the dts-master audio was being used. I got a disc that upgraded the chip that utilizes the codec's.

Don't want to use receiver to turn Plasma on via Verizon DVR

You can not have a signal from cable/satelite TV when reciever is OFF.The only way is reconnect by using defferent setup configuration to illiminate the receiver. In that case you well see just regular Tv program but you should connect antena to your TV.

"The blue light around my volume dial does not light

Try resetting the receiver (you will lose your setup). I recently reset my receiver and the blue light returned. It's possible that the Audacity setup turns off the blue light because the volume is now being "regulated" by the equalizer.

if what Dark_Orbit said does not work try doing a master reset by ressing and holding the dvr/vcr button and stand by button simultaneously. This would erase all your assignments so you would need to reassign all your sources hooked up to your onkyo.

Volume on my Onkyo Receiver

Yes it is. I have the 705. My room mate has the 605. Both AVR's will not have appreciable volume until 50 on the dial.
The dial in not linear. I don't know of anyone who has plotted the scaling of the volume control yet.
I have found much useful user info on avsforum.com. Owners post Q&A based on experiences.
Search the forum for "official onkyo TX-SR605" thread.
Some comparable info may also be found under the "official onkyo TX-SR705".
