- Solution was in the handsets and not the base unit.

The battery in each handset had to be removed and replaced to restore the dial tone and voice capability.

I de-registered handsets 2 to 8 (not 1) to get to a minimum system. Handset 1 still had no dial tone. Removed and replaced the handset 1 battery and got a dial tone.

Re-registered handset 2. No dial tone. Removed and replaced the handset 2 battery and got a dial tone.

Removed and replaced the handset 3 battery. Re-registered handset 3. Got a dial tone.

Same results for handsets 4 to 8.

Believe the problem was stored in the memory of each handset. I think de-registering was just extra work and clearing some part of the handset memory was necessary.

The system has been flawless for several years
