I have a thinkpad laptop with windows XP pro, and I can get sound when I skype, and receive video, but I can not send video. Any suggestions?

OK, go ahead and ask him for the model number of the webcam. It should be on the bottom of the camera. If I have this I can find the manual and give you links to what driver he needs to install as well as any troubleshooting through skype.

Ask you dad about what kind of computer he is using. In fact, just ask him:

    • Are you using a PC or Mac?

    • If you are using a PC, what version of Windows are you running (98/ME/XP/Vista)

    • Is the camera built in to the machine (like with a lot of laptops) or does it plug in?

In the Skype Settings or Preferences on your dad's computer there's an Audio category and a Video category. In the Video settings category there's a drop-down menu where you select your webcam. He needs to make sure his webcam is selected there then click on SAVE at the bottom of the Windows (if there's a SAVE button available).

If you are able to hear audio with a music CD or any other application, then you must un-install the software for the camera, reboot and then reinstall.

If you are unable to hear any sound, then your audio driver may have been knocked out by the camera installation. To reinstall, go to manufacturer of computer's website, click on support, enter model number and choose operating system. The page that follows will allow you to download, free, the audio driver. Restart the computer and see if this helps.

Does not show video on skype; using wondows xp 2010

Send him these instructions
Before you can use your webcam in any chat program you have to configure it to that program

Test your webcam here to make sure it broadcasts ok - Hit 'Allow' in the top window and check your cam in the left hand panel.

http://www.testmycam.com/
Not working ? - troubleshoot your drivers and software - get your cam working before moving on

Working OK ?

CONFIGURE TO SKYPE
Connect webcam
Its good practice to disconnect and re-connect your webcam before you start (To reboot the webcam software) - if you have been using it elsewhere the SKYPE software may have difficulty in locating it, even if you exited the previous program correctly.
The reason being, the webcam software can remain hooked-up to a program and needs to be rebooted.
Mine, I just unplug it from the USB and plug it back in to reboot the software.
If yours is integral with the computer you will have to re-start the computer, use a keyboard shortcut or disable / enable the webcam from the Device Manager.

Start Skype.
On the 'Tools' menu, click 'Options'.
In the navigation pane of the Skype 'Options' window, click 'Audio Settings'
Run down the list setting your defaults
Select your webcam as the default microphone.
Make a free test call
Click 'Save'
In the navigation pane of the Skype Options window, click Video Settings.
This will launch your webcam
Adjust quality of picture in 'Settings'
Check the correct webcam is shown as default
Click Save
Test your webcam by making a Skype test call.

Try your webcam here, by hitting 'Allow' in the top window
http://www.testmycam.com/
Your webcam should broadcast in the left hand window.

If that is successful you know you can now configure it to Skype
Start Skype.
On the Tools menu, click 'Options'.
In the navigation pane of the Skype Options window, click 'Audio Settings'.
Select your mic as the default microphone.
In the navigation pane of the Skype Options window, click 'Video Settings'.
Select your webcam as the default.
Trim webcam image using 'Settings'
Click Save.
Test Cam by making a Skype test call.

Skype shuts down when I enable the video on Skype. I tried using an older version of Skype but still encounter the same problem, any ideas out there

With updating SKYPE your firewall must be updated as well.
Exit/Close your current Skype by clicking in system try Skype icon (down near the right corner green spot)
and choosing “Quit” from there if needed.
Open firewall, in programs, deletes Skype.
Run Skype and allow connecting
This also affects SP2 users who should follow above procedure.
With SP2 firewall.
Disabling external firewall will enable XP firewall by default.
So if you disable any other firewall XP firewall will now block your connections.
So remove Skype from XP firewall program list as well

dont forget to vote fixya rating
