I HAVE MY SONS ACER ASPIRE 5100 WHICH IS ASKING FOR A PASSWORD ON STARTUP AFTER THE ACER LOGO.I DO NOT KNOW WHY THIS HAS HAPPENED,WHY WERE WE NOT ADVISED TO KEEP THE PASSWORD ON FIRST STARTUP?ACER ARE WORSE THAN USELESS UNLESS YOU WANT TO PAY THEM A SMALL FORTUNE.
If your son used the edata security and used both passwords. you can either ask him for password or change the boot secuence to boot to restore disk and restore back to default..which defaults to NO PASSWORD set.

step 1. try entering bios setup and get the error code for example 23456 step 2. in other machine use hirens boot cd and open bios password generator step 3.- choose te option 2 and put your error code.
be sure to remove all other external devices hooked to your pc. just leave ac adapter plugged in. then try if it will boot to safemode by pressing F8 upon seeing the Acer Logo. if it will boot, what you need is reinstall your OS. if it will still not boot then you need to replace hdd.
Try to boot in safemode press f8 key on startup
When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to selectLast Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
if this does not work you can try MSCONFIG (if boots)to try diagnose your problem
if worse comes to you can do factory reset
at acer bios screen hold the ALT key and press F10 to start acer recovery
hope helps a little let me know if i can help further
If the password is the Windows password, the one with the userd icon displayed and Windows logo, then you need to reinstall Windows.
If instead the password pops up right when you turn on the computer, and it is a password with no user id, that pops up right at startup, that is the BIOS supervisor password, in that case to reset it you need to access the motherboard, to do this the laptop must be taken apart, and this job must be done at a repair shop , if you do not want to risk damaging the laptop.
The finger print bull is how that password came up for me and they want a 125.00 to remove it. I called the better business bureau and filed a complaint. They shouldn't have any right to control your laptop. I to have a 6292 , took it apart as far as I could and could not find jumper or password. This is a gimmick to make money.
