Dear Krihard,

Good to hear from some one who is in my Neighbor country India.

well as i know Its not possible to Install any of windows OS on external HDD.
Microsoft Dont allow it, becz they wont be able to make extra money if they give this option.....

But there is a option in my mind; like if External HDD have image of internal drive and computer has option of booting from USB; then it may get loaded,.... Hvn't tried this thing personally...

best regards,

unless the usb drive is formatted correctly the computer will not see the files as a bootable directory. if the cd is not reading try usig an external drive or loading the disc into another computer and see if it works.

Hi and welcome ygshaikh !
Here is one solution ( there are maybe others ) easy to use if your pc is a desktop :
extract the hdd from your machine and connect it to a healthy computer ( in a external USB box or strait inside the pc ) . Format the drive and reinstall it in your machine . You will now be able to install Win XP .
Best regards .

Than you in advance for any and all help pertaing to my issue. Problem: 3-4yr old HP laptop. Did have Win XPsp2 on it. HDD went bad. Used Barts PE to create bootable cd-rom with half working Win XP, but...

Why do it the hard way? If your HDD is bad, most probably the system files are corrupted too and getting/making a bootable CD from the HDD files is just wasting your effort. If you laptop CD/DVD drive is still good, then use the options below: -

1. Go to any torrents site download "hp oem xp" disc from the site & burn the bootable image to a CDR.

2. Go the the Hp support Site & download the XP drivers for your Laptop model.

3. Then you can do a new installations on your Laptop.

Hope it helps.

Installing windows xp --------- Plz tell me that what should be the partition of 40gb HDD if u want to install xp.What should be the file system NTFS OR FAT32?is it true that ntfs is bad for HDD

Choose “NTFS” as it is faster and more secure. It is not bad for your HDD. If you don't have any other Hdd you might want to upgrade. They don't make 40gb hdd any more, XP will take about half that when it installed. It really limits what you will be doing with your computer in the near future.

I hope this helps.. Good luck

My computer can't read external hard disk

I am assuming that you are using Windows XP and USB PORTS on both computers.

First, try to use a different USB PORT on the pc, just to rule out a bad one.

Another thing is that the external HDD may not connect to USB 1.1, only to 2.0 for the speed it needs. Check to see if the pc has USB ports on back of case, those are usually 2.0.

Third thing is to see if any other devices that are USB can connect to your pc. If not, you may want to load the USB DRIVERS back on the pc, as they may be corrupted.

Hope that helps.
