It sounds like the laser pickup is near end of life, as a last resort you can try a cd cleaning kit along shot at best. If this fails the player should be replaced, far cheaper in the long run.

If the motor is spinning the disc, then your problem is with the laser. It either needs to be cleaned or replaced. Cleaning can be done with a regular laser lens cleaning disc, available at any store that sells electronics. A replacement lens assembly can be picked up at any store that specializes in electronics.
This is a job for a Technician of that brand. The unit is not knowing the pause mode is activated so there may be a bad cable or solder joint linking a mechanical IC to that of the main processor.
Are you saying your computer will not read a disk?
Is this a disk you made or someone made and gave to you? If so most there are times when the computer will have trouble reading them.
Try using a store purchased disk such as a music cd that you purchased. If it reads and plays it, then the drive is ok.
Click Start/My Computer and see if your CD Drive is listed as a device. If not, that's your problem.
If the CD Drive is not listed as a device, then remove the power cord, open the case and remove the two cables that plug into the cd drive then plug them back in. Then try rebooting and see if the cd drive is listed as a device in My Computer.
If the drive is still not listed, then you will need to Remove Upper and Lower Filters.
Your pitch control is faulty or dry. Try spraying wd 40 into the pitch sliding hole form top to bottom. Dont over spray it. Just a bit from top to bottom will do. If issue still persists, then there's some capacitors are weak which controls this pitch.
i had the same problem with my jensen phas linear, i called the factory and they told me the lens is probably dirty and to try and clean it, well i did, actually cleaned it a couple times then put the movie in and it has worked fine all day today. make sure you get a good brand cleaning disc, not the 99 cent store kind, i bought mine for about $9 didn't even have to put any cleaning solution.
It might be possible to update the firmware via CD, which may be able to get around certain hardware issues, however I doubt whether it will fix the problem. I have a lot of experience with these units, and in most cases it ends up being the laser or the laser main/driver board. If you know of anyone that can re-work the surface mount componentry, it is worth a try. If these options are not available to you and your unit is out of warranty, it is a throwaway job or sell on internet as faulty. Hope this helps...
