I had exactly the same problem. Check your mtu settings on the 2wire. I think the modem is set at 1450 (or there abouts) An article (sorry can't find a link) suggested raising it to 1500 this didnt work for me so I started reducing it instead. Once i set it at 1400 mtu I was able to log on to secure sites again. Hope this helps.

Reset the windows security files. Go to start, then run and type in cmd. Click ok. In the command prompt type regsvr32 softpub.dll and press enter. Next type regsvr32 wintrust.dll and press enter.

If that doesn't work you may need to lower the MTU setting in your router. This controls the packet size sent and can cause problems with secure site encyption if too large.

MTU setting on my cisco RV042 was set to AUTO. Changing it to manual and 1500 bytes - bingo... that solved my problem. [I could not go through the router to thinkorswim with https reliably - or at all. Evidence of the router problem was all computers plugged directly to the ISPs (dual WAN) worked fine. Solution was instantaneous.

You must have your internet browser settings too high, depending on the browser you use it will be in the internet options.

Since you can't immediately login, remember that you can try logging into the Web Messenger,
at least until you can restore your normal Messenger functionality:
http://webmessenger.msn.com

However, here are some suggestions you should check/try if you haven't already.

1. The date on your computer needs to be set properly -- double click the clock verify that
the time and date are set.
2. If your password information is not saved, verify that you are typing it in with the
correct case (uppercase or lowercase).
3. Change your password @ https://login.passport.com/ChangePW.srf to
something smaller (under 10-12 characters), then try signing in again.
4. If you use a firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security etc. ), it's possible
that Messenger doesn't have the correct rights to access the Internet, especially since you
upgraded. You may need to re/add Messenger to the allowed list of programs in your firewall
if this is the case.
5. If you disabled your firewall in the past, it still may be blocking Messenger -- try
restarting it and see if that helps the situation. You also might try uninstalling an
installed firewall, to verify that it isn't causing a problem (even if it is disabled).
6. Clear your IE cache and cookies -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button, and when that's complete click the
Delete Cookies button.
7. Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and verify that "Check
for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL
3.0' is checked, then click OK.
8. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then click OK
and do the same for the following:
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

I am trying to sign on to msn messenger and i get the error code it is 80048820

Hi,

Please follow steps to resolved issue

The Solutions to MSN Error Code 8004882080048820_lan.jpg Internet Explorer - Try removing the tick next to Internet Explorer 'Proxy server' settings, instead, go with the 'Automatically detect settings'.
1) Launch Internet Explorer, click Tools and then click Internet Options.
From the Internet Options dialog box, go to the Connections tab.
Click LAN Setting. Un check the Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections) checkbox. Finally positively tick: 'Automatically detect settings'.
2) Register softpub.dll.
Click Start (Button), and then click Run, type regsvr32 softpub.dll. Restart MSN Messenger. See also Error code 81000314
3) If necessary, logon as a local administrator and set the computer's clock to the correct date and time. (Check on the internet if possible.)
4) Turn off the firewall temporarily. Check firewall settings such as Norton: "Block access to secure sites". If this cures the problem, make sure that Microsoft's MSN Messenger is allowed full access through your firewall.
NetGear problem, but also with some other routers
a) Enter IP address 192.168.0.1 in your browser's address bar.
b) Log on with ISP user name and password.
c) Enter Admin, password
d) Navigate to advanced menu, WAN set-up
e) Change MTU size to 1400
5) Try a password of no more than 8 characters.
6) If you are using IE 7.0 check the SSL Settings. Internet options advanced (Tab) scroll down to the bottom. Security section. Tick 'Use ssl 2.0'.
7) One of the simplest ways of curing MSN error 80048820 is to unplug, or restart your modem. This is particularly effective for cable modems.
8) We should have tried this solution before; check that the MSN site is 'up' 'available'. However, even if the site is down, you don't usually get error code 80048820.
8a) As a variation, of checking online, you could try phoning your local Microsoft Support office. Local area numbers available from http://support.microsoft.com.
9) Have you just installed any anti-virus software? Did the anti-virus software just make a big update? Try disabling and see if that cures the error.
10) A drastic solution is to try uninstalling MSN Messenger version 8.0 or 7.5 and install Microsoft MSN version 7.0.

Hope it can resolved issue
Thanks for using Fixya

Acer Aspire 5630 will not fuction with MSN messenger Yahoo messenger or Skype

I don't know what exactly is happening when you say it is not functioning. I'm assuming that the software would load but it wouldn't send and receive messages.
  • Check your firewall - it maybe that your firewall or even antivirus (sometimes it's bundled with a firewall) is blocking certain ports that those programs require to send and receive messages.
  • To diagnose this, go to control panel then security centre and click "windows firewall" on the left, change settings and turn off the firewall. Leave that control panel open and attempt to use MSN etc.

December 11 Error: 80072745 If you are encountering the error code 80072745 when you sign into Messenger try the following: 1. People cannot see me on cam

every application when it connects to the internet, it uses "ports" , now if the port that the messenger is trying to use for the "cam" is blocked , you basically experience that kinda problem. first disable your firewall (try windows first, then any other firewall (like norton, mcafee or other), also check with your Router or Modem (if DSL) but usually these ports are open by default, but you never know sometimes untill you check it. but your best bet is the firewall that is blocking your port for the cam.
disabling the firewall is the easy solutions, opening the ports is the longer one. of help on opening ports on you DSL modem OR router (or both), check this site
good luck
