Question about Lite On LTN 323 (LTN-323) Internal 32x CD-ROM Drive

1 Answer

CD-ROM will not read any disc

I have a Lite-On CD-ROM that was included with a Dell Dimension Desktop system. Yesterday, I had a DSL connection installed to the computer. The CD-ROM worked fine before, during, and even for a few hours after the installation. All of a sudden, while I was playing a game that requires a disc to run, the CD-ROM stopped reading the disc. I removed the disc and reloaded it; the LED light came on for a few seconds and then went did not sound like it was trying to read the disc. The CD-ROM is shown to be working properly in device manager, and uninstalling/reinstalling/updating the drivers did not change anything. The drive is shown in explorer, but it says that there is no disc. I tried different discs with no change. I don't know what my next step should be, short of replacing the drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: CD-ROM will not read any disc

Well try to clean the lens with a clean and dry cotton swab. ir you have a compressed air duster for electronics, use it also. remove the drive and open the cover. look for small like circle glass(lens) clean it. use also the compress air duster by hitting the below parts of the lens assembly to remove accumulated dust and test. if the problem persist, its about time to replace your drive. good luck!

The Samsung CD-Rom SC148A on my Dell Dimension 2400 won't recognize any discs that I insert. Device Manager says there's nothing wrong with it, the driver is up-to-date, troubleshooting provided nothing,...

It might be dirt on the pickup lens, and you can try cleaning it. The best way to do that is to take the drive out, remove the cover and use a cotton swab moistened with lens cleaning solution. The cleaning discs you can buy aren't usually effective. But if you're going to go through all that effort, you may as well just replace the drive. If dirt isn't the problem, the most likely cause is that the laser power has dropped too low for the discs to be read, or the pickup has failed. In that case, you'll need to replace the drive anyway. A new CD-RW/DVD-RW drive is only around $20 (or something equally inexpensive in your local currency), and it's easy to change the drive, so it's really not worth worrying about trying to repair this one.
