Few days back I updated the software of my sound driver ,after that I am unable to hear any sound even when windows starts up . I can hear it thru my headphones not thru the internal speakers. it's a HP pavilion dv6131od.
I was unable to revert back the changes . So I restored the whole OS and still it's not working .
Hear by ear peicce nothing laptop speaker even when windows start. Thank you for your help.
I had the same problem; my laptop's speakers suddenly stopped working but I could still use the headphones and sound was fine.
I played around a while and searched the net; and I got them to work:
Open Control Panel- Sound, Speech, Audio Devices-------->
1) Audio Tab
2) Under 'Sound Playback' hit Advanced
3) At the bottom where it has Speaker Setup change it to "Laptop Stereo
Speakers" (mine was initially on "Desktop Stereo Speakers" for some odd

Re: sound is not working on my hp laptop
There may be a defect in the driver that you downloaded. I had a problem with my touchpad once (HP tx2001au) and I used System Restore to go back. This will not harm your personal files and folders. It will just roll back all the settings and programs installed.

If you have windows 7, you could try to update the driver software for it. Most time the driver is not up to date. Also you can reinstall the OS/windows again. This may work for other OS too. Another solution may be to boot up in safe mode. When computer is first turned on press F8 right before windows logo starts loading. Try to use system restore to an earlier saved point when it was working. This is another quick fix, if you are on a laptop, turn off the computer, unplug the AC adapter it, take out the battery,
hold the power button to the right for 30 seconds, put the battery back
in, plug the AC adapter back in, turn it on. On pc, you will want to unplug the pc and the keyboard, wait a few seconds and plug them back in. They should work now, then update the drivers right away, before they freeze again. Good luck
This issue could be due to corrupt audio driver or corrupt BIOS settings on the notebook. To isolate this issue, uninstall and reinstall the audio drivers. If the issue persists, then update BIOS on the notebook. You can download the drivers from the HP software & drivers website of your notebook model.
THIS MAYBE IN A FEW PLACES CHECK THE FOLLOWING FOLDERS IN THE CONTROL PANEL.
NETWORKING AND SHARING

OFF CHANCE IT CAN BE SECURITY AND WINDOWS ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM NOT ALLOWING YOU TO MAKE THAT CONNECTION
YOU MAY COM OVER A RED X
THIS MEANS NO CONNECTION
YOU MAY FIND RED,YELLOW EVEN ORANGE CHECK MARK THIS STATES THERE IS A CONFLICK WITH THE SOFTWARE OR HARDWARE OR BOTH, OUTDATED DRIVERS MAY CAUSE YOU PROBLEMS, OUT OF DATE UPGRADES ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH NEW DRIVERS OR OPERATIONAL SYSTEM SOFTWARE. i messed with this for days, trying to install older versions of nvidia and installing drivers but nothing seemed to work. so i finally read the manuel to my hp dv9500. they address this in like the third page. it says in order to have sound through hdmi u must change your speadek settings to digital.
go into control panal, click on hardware and sound, select sound, and under the playback tab select the digital output and set it as default. you wont get any sound out of the computer speakers but presto!!!! it plays sound out of my tv with the hdmi cable its great!!!!
did you RESTORE the OS or did you reformat and REINSTALL the OS? if you did a complete reformat and reinstall either 1) the software has changed Firmware settings and messed up the hardware or 2) The Reinstalling process has installed similarly unfunctional drivers or 3) there is an unrelated problem that is the real cause of the issue.
I'd try getting ahold of a whole set of drivers and trying each one. You might also want to look into BIOS updates for the HP, they might have fixed the issue already.
First off, if they can hear you and you can't hear them, it's not your microphone. It is more likely related to your sound card, possibly a driver update could fix your issue. Go to Toshiba's support site here's the link for the portege model listed above: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_modelLanding.jsp?ProductMenu_0=Portables&ProductMenu_1=Portege&model_find=S100-S1133&ProductMenu_2=1042298&moid=1042298&rpn=PPS10U&smoid=true&ct=MH&ListType=Model&x=27&y=7, and select drivers and look for the sound card drivers with the latest/most recent date, download them and update your driver to see if that fixes your issue. Since you post that your sound works in other areas just not chat or Skype, you might also want to do a Windows update on their site and choose custom for your choice so you can review hardware and software updates to add to any critical/security updates found on your PC, and that may fix your issue also. Good luck.
