Grinding Sound - Orange Paper Jam Light

I like my 4L, it has worked beautifully for a number of years. When it starts printing, the green lights go on (it looks like it is about to print), then a terrible grinding sound is audible. It ends up with the orange light blinking for "Paper Jam". It tries to pick up the paper, crumples it, and then stops.

I, too, have this problem with my HPLaserjet 4L. The printer begins just fine, then a grinding noise, then finally the blinking printer jam light goes on. I need help to fix. Thanx. Wes

I have the same problem. Everything mosesclive wrote is good boilerplate for solving a paper jam, but those of us with the problem have already done all that.

Can someone help me cure that hideous noise? My printer is 14 years old - I like it to make 20...

The most common problem (beyond actual paper jam) that I've seen as a repair-man, is the paper-feed foot getting flipped over when someone inserts/re-loads the paper-tray. Unfortunately, it's been so long since I've fixed that issue I don't remember how to safely revert that very fragile foot to its proper orientation. Currently over at an elderly friend's house, trying to fix the very issue.

You may want to have a look at the illustrated instructions posted here
    http://www.rheinfeld.de/andreas/laserjet...

    Doesn't look complicated at all.

The following are possible causes for paper jams in the HP LaserJet printers:

  • Leaving the rear access door open.
  • Removing the paper cassette while printing.
  • Overfilling the paper cassette.
  • Not having the corners of the paper stack under the metal clips in the paper cassette.
  • Printing a letter-sized document on legal-sized paper.
  • Using paper that does not meet the printer's specifications.
  • Using damaged paper.
  • Storing paper incorrectly, so that it curls or is exposed to moisture.
  • Printing on paper that has already been through the printing process once (LaserJet 4L/4ML only).
SOLUTION:
  1. Open the top door, take out the print cartridge (do not expose to light for more than a few minutes).
  2. Pull out the paper cassette.
  3. If the paper is here, pull to the right to release it from the feed roller. Then pull it straight out. If the paper is removed from this location, replace the paper cassette and print cartridge and shut the top door. The printer should return to a READY state. If not, proceed to Step 3.
  4. If the paper has gone completely into the printer, carefully pull the jammed paper toward you to remove it. Do not pull the paper straight up when removing it. (The toner on the page can stain the printer and affect the print quality. If this happens, take the printer to an authorized service center.)
  5. If the trailing edge of the paper is under the transparent cover, pull the paper toward you to remove it. If the paper is difficult to remove, open the printer's rear access door. While pushing the green paper release lever up, pull the paper straight toward you. Replace the paper cassette and print cartridge and close the top door. The printer should return to a READY state. If not, proceed to Step 4.
  6. If the paper is jammed at the back of the printer, open the rear access door. While pushing the green paper release lever up, pull out the paper. The important thing to remember is to try not to tear the paper; hold your hands as close to the printer as possible while pulling the paper out. Close the rear access door, replace the paper cassette and print cartridge and close the top door. The printer should return to a READY state.
  7. If the Paper light continues to blink (HP LaserJet 4L/4ML printer) or a 13 Paper Jam message flashes (HP LaserJet 4P/4MP printer), open and close the top door of the printer. This should clear the error.

HP LaserJet 4L quit working It's connected to my PC and it's on. All 4 lights are on; 2 green and 2 orange. When I try to print, the paper goes through but nothing is printed on the paper.

Empty cartridge maybe?
Otherwise it's simple: selt-test page(by printer button) printed ok - it's outer problem. Self-page is blank - it's inner problem. And so on... use Golden Section method

Hp 4L printer won't pickup paper from tray. Sequence- green led light- motor running but with grinding- no movement from pickup roller or foot- finally a misfeed led light.

That is a very common problem with the Laserjet 4L and 4P printers. The sound you hear is caused by a broken motor drive gear. This is a small plastic gear on the drive motor shaft. They can develop a small crack which prevents the motor from turning the gears for paper pickup and toner movement. When the motor tries to turn the broken gear can not turn the other gears and makes the popping or grinding sound when the gear teeth slip. You will need to replace the motor gear, it is available here:

I hope this helps,

My HP LaserJet 4L printer just makes a grinding sound when I attempt to get it to print. It makes the sound for several seconds and then the Paper light starts to flash without printing

Common issue with these older 4L printers. The problem is a small plastic gear on the main drive motor has cracked. This is what causes the noise and since the machine is not "running" there is no paper feed and thus the paper jam light. Basically there is no drive to any of the printers components. May be hard to find a replacement motor these days but that is what you would need to fix the printer.

My HP LaserJet 4L printer just makes a grinding sound-won't print

That printer has a gear on the motor that cracks. You can fix it with a new or used motor. Or get a different machine on craigslist. Thank you, Steven 805-520-3003

Reset. Orange light blinks several times. Then Green. Then orange several times, then... on and on. Cannot reset. All ink cartridges have ink.

count the number of orange flashes in between the green light. two flashes = out of paper, 3=paper jam, 4=empty ink tank, 6=print head not installed, 7=print head defective, 8=waste ink tank is almost full

The Power Light Flashes Orange - Error Codes When an error occurs, the power light flashes orange. The number of orange flashes followed by a long green flash indicates the cause of the problem.
Two orange flashes: Out of paper, paper jam, or paper feed error
If no paper is loaded in the auto sheet feeder, or if the paper is not loaded correctly, set the paper correctly and press the Resume button on the printer to continue printing.
Three orange flashes: Paper jam
If paper has jammed in the printer, carefully remove the jam and press the Resume button to continue printing.
Four orange flashes: A tank inside the BJ cartridge (print head) is out of ink
Replace the empty BJ tank and press the Resume button to continue printing.
Five orange flashes: BJ cartridge is not installed properly
Remove and reseat the cartridge correctly. Make sure the orange protective cap and tape have been removed. Make sure the blue locking lever is locked down securely.
Six orange flashes: BJ cartridge (printhead) is not installed
Remove and reseat the cartridge correctly. Make sure the orange protective cap and tape have been removed. Make sure the blue locking lever is locked down securely.
Seven orange flashes: BJ cartridge (printhead) is defective
Remove the BJ cartridge and check that the contacts on the cartridge and cartridge holder are clean. Make sure the orange protective cap and tape have been removed and reinstall the cartridge. If the error occurs again after you resume operation, you may need to replace the BJ cartridge.
Eight orange flashes: Waste ink absorber almost full
The printer has a built-in waste ink absorber to hold the ink that is consumed during print head cleaning. This error indicates that the waste ink absorber is nearly full. Press the Resume button to skip the error so you can continue printing.
The POWER light flashes orange and green alternately: Service error
A service error means the printer requires the attention of a qualified technician. Count the number of flashes. (You may be asked this information.)
