Question about Panasonic TH-50PX50U 50 in. Plasma HDTV

1 Answer

Panasonic Plasma (model TH-50PX50U) "spark" in back, now not work

I have a new 50 inch panasonic plasma that I purchased new three years ago.  I have it mounted on a swing arm in a safe location.  It has worked great until today when I slowly pulled out the swing arm to adjust the view and almost immediately after touching it and moving it a few inches I heard a spark and saw a flash of light from the back of the unit... almost like an electrical socket when you plug something in and it sparks... but the spark was from the back of the TV (no smoke).  Now the TV wont even turn on no matter what I do.  Any suggestions besides sending it in for repair (which will probably cost $500 which is half the price of the unit).?  thanks  Marc

Marc,
The spark was probably something on the smps (switch mode power supply) going critical. In that unit you have a "P" board where the regulators are located and that would be where to look first. The bad news is that if you need to replace that they're $322.20 with a $150 core at my cost, plus shipping, p/n# Etxmm564mek and I can't imagine what you would pay - probably 20% more than that - just for the part.
There is also, of course, the possibility that additional components on the smps would need to be replaced, that if you missed them and didn't replace them could cause the "P" module to merely fail again... Short of it is a tech would be a real good investment. If you have any trouble locating a good reputable shop I suggest using the NESDA web site and search at the top for a tech in your area. NESDA is the National Electronic Service Dealer's Assn. and you have to be a highly qualified professional to belong.
Hope this helps!
Bill
