You might try this; start/run/regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll and then try to install the update

Can't turn on windows defender

Make sure you don't have any other virus program running such as Norton, Mcafee, AVG, etc. If you do then that will stop windows defender from turning on. If you do have any virus programs running you'll have to uninstall them before turning on Windows Defender.

The truth about anti-virus software

Which anti-virus software is the best? This is a question I get asked at least weekly and the answer is it's a matter of opinion. If there was a best anti-virus program there would'nt be so many, after all there is only one Windows.
It is strictly preference some people love Norton while other hate it because it slows down their pc due to the number of processes it runs.
I personal prefer Bit-defenders online scanner because it is online not bogging down my computer and whatever it can not disinfect it deletes. Another good thing is the updates can not be shut off by a trojan since it is online.
My advice is try several with a free trial and choose whichever you like best.

Responding very slowly. I recently installed Defender Pro.

This is because Defender Pro is a malware - a scareware to be more precise = a program that scares you with false claims of infections on your pc so you buy it while itself is a trojan (a virus that gives control the total control over your pc over to other criminals).
Since by now the damage is extensive and almost impossible to overcome the best solution for you is to reinstall Windows and this time install immediately a good antivirus like Avast.

It may not be a virus. It sounds more like a bad case of spyware. You may want to download, install, update, and run something like Malwarebytes AntiMalware. It sounds pretty serious, so it may need the attention of a PC technician to fully remove the infection.

Hope this helps!

Best virus/spyware protection

be careful when using symantec, it is a real resource hog! It does a good job, but is also expensive and costs annually to use. I use all the same items as GregL except i have had a lot of problems with SP3 :/ then again i normally install it on a working machine, and it messes somthing up. On a fresh install of windows XP it should do fine (SP3 that is)

On bootup checks, stops at 02FC Main and second fans failed. Black screen with bootup messages. ?Has the MA7 even got two fans? How to correct.

Sounds like you may have a virus or trojan of some sort. They are hard to get rid of but try downloading avg 8.0 it's free and picks up most trojans and viruses. If you get a black screen with boot message just hit control alt delete together and your pc should bypass this problem and allow you in. If avg doesn't pick up trojan or virus it maybe a software failure but it will usually tell you whats missing and if pc was working fine and just started this it is most likely a virus or trojan

There seems to a problem with your win defender turn off defender and try to install the anti virus software as when you have one anti virus or a firewall running it will not allow another anti virus to be installed. Also check if you have any other anti virus installed

How do you get rid of a virus that has got thru my norton, firewall and windows defender. i think its a trojan?

You can try different antivirus like AVG, NOD32, or kaspersky, but if you really want to erase it then back up all of your data and then reformat your HD using the Windows Vista Installation disk.Or better delete the partition and then recreate it,this will 110% get rid of that virus. You may want to use a anti spyware utility like ad-aware this can also get rid most spyware/trojan out their.
