Question about Goldstar MA-2117W / B 1150 Watts Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Intermittent display function

I have a 6+ year old 1150 watt goldstar that has been pampered, & has given us flawless service... it's used mostly to heat things up...not to cook for extended periods of time... it has developed an intermittent problem, that i'm guessing may be caused by a loose connection... symptoms: when setting the keypad for a duty cycle, the display will sometimes blank out or show 8's & blank-out for a period time, ranging from seconds, to, up to 2 minutes or so.... tapping on the cabinet or opening & closing the door, or un/re-plugging, the unit seems to restore function quicker... & my wife says sometimes when it blanks-out, she leaves the unit & finds it has returned to normal, when she returns later... it's totally random event happening perhaps 2% of the time... when the glitch is not present, the unit functions perfectly... no weird noises or smells detected... thanks in advance, guru's lee / columbus

Re: intermittent display function

Sometimes this is a problem with a door switch or mount. Other times it's a problem with the control panel assembly, which we regularly repair nationwide for just $32.50. We have *critical* safety and disassembly tips plus info on diagnosing and replacing door switches at our Web site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your base model number (without the suffix) here:

What is watts for goldstar MA 1280M Microwave and if it is over 1100 watts cani i adjust it down

You can set it to different levels. It is doubtfull the magnetron will deliver more than 750 Watts as that is about all they can produce singley. Commercial ovens use at least two magnetrons.
Most specs on microwave ovens quote the power drawn not power produced.
I hope that helps.

Ringing noise from refrigerator

It's probably a dry bearing on either the compressor or the fan in the freezer. The evaporator, I believe it's called.

If it's under a year old, it's probably in warranty. You can get warranty info & find a local authorized servicer from there, too.

The first thing to try is a "hard reset". Unplug it from the power line for a few minutes, plug it back in, set the clock, then try again.

Otherwise, you may have a failing keypad. It can fail due to age, moisture, etc.

PLEASE Let us know if the hard reset doesn't fix it.

We have the service manual available to us.

Power is on, but won't cook

First, be sure the child lock is off. It may have an "L" or the word "LOCKED" showing in the display. You can unlock it by pressing and holding the CLEAR pad for 5 seconds or so. Your model may use a different key, maybe the "0" (zero) key. If that doesn't fix it, since it's still under warranty you should grab your sales receipt and your owner's manual and call LG / Goldstar customer service at 1-800-243-0000 to find the nearest authorized servicer. There may be some foreign substance on the circuit board or inside the layers of the keypad. Most commonly this is due to spray cleaner being sprayed directly onto the keypad. Cleaner should be always sprayed on a soft cloth first, then use the cloth to wipe the keypad clean. Always use alcohol-based cleaner on microwaves, never ammonia-based cleaner, which can crack and/or warp the plastic. If this is what has happened, it would not be covered under warranty, and it may or may not be repairable. A handy person can remove the control panel frame and see if there's any liquid inside on or behind the panel. If so, it is possible to dry it out with an air compressor or heat, but often that does not work.
