Question about Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition 120GB External USB 2.0 Portable 120 GB IDE Hard Drive
My one touch maxtor worked last week, but doesn't this week.
I plugged it in to my laptop USB ports, and to 2 different computers. I tried another persons cables from a like maxtor and it still didn't work. I plugged her maxtor into my laptop and her unit worked.
When I plug it in to any computer the light will go on, but there is not indication that the computers are seeing any connection in "my computer"
What can I do? Can I get the information off the maxtor in other way.
This isn't a solution, but will give you more information about whether you can recover the data. If your computer recognizes the drive when you insert it, but doesn't assign it a letter, you can probably recover much of the data.
For XP: Click on "Start"-"Settings"-"Control Panel", and select "Administrative Tools". If you don't have that menu, there are other ways to get into the control panel, depending on how you've configured your OS.
Click on "Computer Management" (on the right window), then "Disk Management" (on the right again). This shows a picture of each of the hard drives on your system. The "Volume" shows the letter assigned. If you unplug the hard drive, and then plug it back it, you can easily tell which volume is being added or removed.
If you can right click on the volume, it may be a simple matter of running "checkdisk" to fix any errors (click properties, and see if that is an option in the "Tools" tab). If all the options are disabled, the drive has been corrupted. However, you may still be able to recover the data with a data recovery program (I have R-Studio, but there are a lot of others out there). If the drive doesn't show up at all, you'll probably need a professional.
Note: If you have a lot of drives, you may just need to free up a drive letter to be able to see the drive. You can right click, and if "Change drive letter/path" is enabled, try that.
