Question about 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless Router

1 Answer

Hi, I have recently set up a network with a 3com 3CRWER200-75. The problem shows when i visit websites like for example www.amazon.com or any microsoft site. The router is new. My broadband connection is powerful. and i' used to have one 3COM 3C857, but it went broke. I know mi problem is the router because i tried the same installation with a 2WIRE router and it worked well so i believe my problem come from the router´s settings. My DCHP is enabled and my range is customized, i have been tryin different configurations and nothing has worked, what can i do?

    Hi thanks for the answer

MTU sound risky applying it for my 36 computers distributed in my LAN, i don't think it is necessary because the same installation was tested with a 2WIRE router and NO problem showed up, that's why i know the problem is my 3COM settings.

And as for other fixes nothing is blockin those pages, not my server, not my firewall and not my antivirus and if something of those mentioned before could be the problem, it would show up with my other 3COM router.

Hi,
This could have a number of causes. However, you could try adjusting your MTU settings, since this can cause problems with accessing msn and similar sites. You can do this from within the router user interface.
You may well have tried this already. If not, experiment gradually with reducing the MTU setting towards 1400 - see this link for a quick tutorial (though not your router model, I know).
http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n100603.asp
For safety, of course, please back up the registry, or set a system restore point, before trying this out.
Other 'fixes' depend on your OS and security settings. However, since the problem does seem to be within your new router, you might find more information on the 3com knowledgebase.

Depending on which router you have, you will want to go to the website and the website will show you step by step how to secure your router for example, www.linksys.com www.netgear.com www.belkin.com. It will also have Firmware you can download directly from the website.

Ugrade 3com router 3CRWDR200A-75

The first thing I would check would be in the configuration (point your web browser to 192.168.1.1 when you have a wired connection) panel, under:
Wireless settings > configuration

If the 'Wireless mode' is set to 'SuperG', this may be your problem. The SuperG setting will only work with SuperG enabled wireless adapters. First change this setting to 'Mixed 11b/11g'; if it still doesn't work switch down to '11g' then to '11b'.

Do all your wireless testing with a laptop or PC as close to the router as possible - same room at the very least.

If all other settings are correct (double check them), this is the only thing I can think of that can instantly make a difference.

If you feel the firmware may be faiilty, note that although 3.0.1 is the 'newest' on the 3com website, even in their own knowledge base they refer to newer versions. These newer versions are available at:
http://3crwdr.googlepages.com/

You could try using one of these (at your own risk), if you feel it is the firmware itself that is causing the fault.

MY INTERNET CONNECTION IS 3COM ON TISCALI AND IT SAYS IT IS UNSECURED-HOW DO I SECURE IT?

Call your ISP and ask them to walk you through it. I use my ISP tech support for everything. I use Clear wireless internet (www.clear.com/?utm_source=bc) out of Portland and I pay $50 a month for their “Unlimited” package so I figure – hey – I should get my moneys worth in both downloads and support!

3com 3crwdr200a reboots every 30 minutes

The 3com website is remarkably shoddy on this issue, and doesn't have the newest required updates. Even the KB on their site is thin on solutions.

You really need firmware 3.6.4, yet 3.0.1 is the latest on the official website. Try this page:
http://3crwdr.googlepages.com/

for the very latest firmwares, and note that it's best to clear out the router memory completely before adding the new firmware to it. This is because it sometimes doesn't like the new image files otherwise. The way I suggest:
1. Note all of your settings manually (don't save a config file, it may not read back in).
2. Hard reset and clear the memory, by holding down the reset button and powering on.
3. Connect to 192.168.1.1 with your browser - you may need to mess with the network settings on your PC to get it to connect. You will see a very bland screen, asking you for a firmware file, rather than the traditional login screen.
4. Upload the latest firmware, downloaded from the site above.
5. Allow the router to do it's business and restart.
6. Connect back to 192.168.1.1, and you will once again see the correct router software, with a new install wizard.
7. Re-enter all your settings, as noted above.

There are actually 3 models of the WL-542. Go to this page and select "All downloads" in the section matching your model. You will find the exact model number on a sticker on the side or under your WL-542.

Limited or no connectivity

you need to get into the routers settings (192.168.1.1 in your web browser) and look for DHCP, and enable it so as to give your pc's there automatic ip addresses, also check in the general settings if it's a modem router that you have got a internet connection from your ISP and all the dns and ip addresses are showing. Go to the properties of each network card in network connections in your control panel and click on the TCP/IP line and click properties again and ensure obtain ip address automatically is selected and click ok. Restart all pc's if neccasary and refresh your web browser when trying to get online.
