Question about Intel Motherboard

I am trying to hook up front panel usb ports.

I found the pins on the motherboard, but I do not know which wire goes to which pin. I have the number 1 and number 2 wires with 5v, -d, +d, and gnd. Actually there are two wires labeled with the number 1 that r Ground.

Can someone please tell me which wire goes to which pin? Either that or where can i get a manual for the motherboard? The motherboard is Intel E210882.

pin 1 = +5V
pin 3 = D-
pin 5 = D+
pin 7 = GND

pins 2,4,6,and 8 are another usb connection

pin 2 = +5V
pin 4 = D-
pin 6 = D+
pin 8 = GND

pin 10 is not used

The motherboard is shown as installed in the computer case.
I will use this orientation to explain the various cable, (Wires) hookups

We will be referring to the motherboard photo, and if you will scroll down, the motherboard layout as shown in an illustration.

Let's go to the illustration, and refer back to the photo.
Perhaps make it easy on yourself. Open the above link in two windows. One window with the photo, one window with the illustration.

1) The white 3-pin connector at the top of the motherboard, and to the left of the Ram Memory slots, is for the Processor Fan. It is labeled CPU_FAN1.

(CPU = Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or simply Processor for short)

2) The Berg connector to the right of the Ram Memory slots, (Top right corner) is labeled JLPC1, and is ONLY used by the manufacturer for board level debugging purposes.
(Junction Low Pin Count 1)

3) The processor socket is labeled Socket AM2.
To the bottom Left corner is a 4-socket hole connector, and whitish in color, JPW1.
A 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable plugs in here.

Note the Lock on the side of the power cable's connector, and matching Tab on the motherboard connector. The Lock operates like a see-saw on a playground. Squeeze the top in to release.

4) Below JPW1 is SYS_FAN1.
This is where a computer case fan hooks up.

5) Look below the Ram Memory slots. There you will see 5 connectors labeled SATA1 through SATA5.
SATA1 is for the Harddrive. SATA2 through SATA5 are for optical drives, and additional SATA harddrives.

Bottom of motherboard come across from the Left side;

6) The front of your computer is the Front Panel.
JAUD1 is for the audio ports in the Front Panel

7) JAUX1 goes to the PRIMARY optical drive, if there are two optical drives. (CD/DVD drive)

8) J1394_1 is for the Firewire ports on the Front Panel. They will be labeled 1394, or similar. (1394a)

9) JSPD1: To my knowledge not connected.

10) JUSB1 has provisions (Contact pins) for hooking up TWO USB ports on the Front Panel.
So does JUSB2

JUSB4 through JUSB6 are for a USB port. One USB port for each one of them.

11) JFP1 is Junction Front Panel 1.
Another term used is the Front Panel header.

This is where the Power On switch, Power On LED light, HarDDrive activity LED light, and Reset switch, (IF used), hook up to from the Front Panel.

Note the two rows.
4 pins across the Top row
5 pins across the Bottom row.

The pins are numbered.
The pins across the Top row are numbered EVEN
The pins across the Bottom row are numbered ODD.

Starting on the LEFT side coming across to the Right; Top row;,
Pins 2, 4, 6, and 8.

Starting on the Left side coming across to the Right; Bottom row,
Pins 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.

A) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive activity LED. (Light)
Pin 1 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
If the HDD LED is dim when the harddrive is active, switch the wires around.

B) Pins 5 and 7 are for a Reset switch, IF a Reset switch is used.
If not No Connection.

C) Pin 9 is N/C. Not Connected.
This is reserved for the factory to use.

D) Pins 2 and 4 are for the Power On LED (Light)
Pin 2 is for the Positive ( + )
If the PWR LED is dim when the computer is on, switch the wires around.

E) Pins 6 and 8 are for the Power On switch

F) There is No Pin 10. This is called the 'Key'
Helps you orient the Front Panel cable's connector, to the Front Panel header.
(JFP1)

USB cables for HP's are usually Black. Called cables because they have individual wires in them.

Each cable going to a set of two USB ports, in the Front Panel, for the USB1 and USB2 headers on the motherboard.

A card reader will use a USB header on the motherboard, or two of them.
The power cable to it is the same as used on a Floppy Drive,

This power cable goes to a SATA harddrive, or a SATA optical drive,

This is an example of a SATA data cable, and it's respective connector on the motherboard.
NOTE* Does NOT matter about color. Color of the connectors, or the cable.
Also look at the L-shaped opening, and the L-shape on the motherboard connector.

Plus a 90 degree elbow on the SATA data cable, is usually connected to a Harddrive, or Optical Drive.
A straight connector usually goes to the motherboard.

Often there is a 'bump', you press on top of the SATA data cable connector, to release it. The bump is a Lock.

Again color does not matter. The only time it may come close, is individual coloring of the SATA connectors on the motherboard, to distinguish their numbering.

(SATA1 Dark Blue. SATA2 White. SATA3 Light Blue.
SATA4 Yellow. SATA5 Red. SATA6 Black)

If the optical drive/s are IDE (PATA), they will use a standard 4-pin Peripheral power cable,

MX46-633V CONNECTING FRONT USB


I believe you're referring to the AOpen MX46-533V

The Front Panel USB header is Blue in color, and located in-between the white No.3 PCI expansion slot, and bottom edge of the motherboard;

With the motherboard in the installed position;
5 pins across the Top row, 4 pins across the Bottom row.

Pins across the Top row are numbered EVEN
Pins across the Bottom row are numbered ODD

Starting on the Left side coming across to the Right, Top row;
Pins 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10

Starting on the Left side coming across to the Right,
Bottom row;
Pins 1, 3, 5, and 7

There are TWO USB connectors supported off of this USB front panel header.

For one of the USB front panel connectors;

A) Pin 1 is USB PWR 0
Goes to the VCC contact pin on the USB connector.

B) Pin 3 is USB_FP_P0-
Goes to the D- pin on the USB connector.
(Data - )

C) Pin 5 is USB_FP_P0+
Goes to the D+ pin on the USB connector
(Data +)

D) Pin 7 is Ground (GND)
Goes to the Ground (GND) pin on the USB connector

E) No pin 9

F) Pin 2 is USB PWR 0

For the other Front Panel USB connector;

A) Pin 2 is USB PWR 0
Goes to the VCC pin on the USB connector

( A USB connector, and a USB plug are not wired the same.
The plug is wired backwards from what a connector is.
Otherwise you would have power and signal going to the wrong pins, and burn the USB Front Panel header out on the motherboard )

In the drop down list, click on - Manual
Under the subheading - Download, click on the blue -

There are two USB headers on the motherboard for the Front Panel,
JUSB1 and JUSB2. (Junction USB 1 and Junction USB 2)

Looking along the bottom of the motherboard, FROM the Right going towards the Left;

JFP1 header; (Front Panel main wires)
Header with 4 pins on the Top row, and 5 pins on the Bottom row.

JFP2 header; (Dual color Power On LED, and Speaker)
Header with 4 pins on the Top row, {Speaker}, and 3 pins on the Bottom row.

JUSB2 header.

JUSB1 header.

EACH USB header will support TWO USB ports in the Front Panel.
JUSB1 supports two,
JUSB2 supports two.

For each USB header there are 5 pins across the Top, 4 pins across the Bottom.
The pins are numbered EVEN across the Top, and ODD across the Bottom.

Starting from the LEFT side going across to the RIGHT side;
on the TOP row for JUSB2 and JUSB1;
Pins 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.

Starting from the LEFT side going across to the RIGHT side;
on the BOTTOM row for JUSB1 and JUSB2;
Pins 1, 3, 5, and 7. There is NO pin 9.

A) Pin 2 is VCC
B) Pin 4 is USB1-
C) Pin 6 is USB1+
D) Pin 8 is Ground

E) Pin 10 is USBOC

Pin 10 is N/C -> Not Connected.
It is there, and Pin 9 is not there, to key which way a connector can go on. Only ONE way.

F) Pin 1 is VCC
G) Pin 3 is USB0-
H) Pin 5 is USB0+
I) Pin 7 is Ground

There is NO pin 9.

(The USB technology used is USB 2.0)

Let's read together,
Under - USB pinout signals;

"USB is a serial bus. It uses 4 shielded wires: two for power (+5v & GND) and two for differential data signals (labeled as D+ and D- in pinout). NRZI (Non Return to Zero Invert) encoding scheme used to send data with a sync field to synchronise the host, and receiver clocks. In USB data cable Data+ and Data- signals are transmitted on a twisted pair. No termination needed. Contrary to popular belief, D+ and D- operate together; they are not separate simplex connections."

See the USB examples in the link above, where it labels the contact pins?
The MALE connectors are shown on the Left side.
The FEMALE connectors are shown on the Right side.

Your USB ports will be FEMALE, on the Front Panel.
They are also the A style. USB A style. The Top example to the Right.

Just noting the following in case for some reason, the wires coming from those contact pins in the female USB connector, are not color coded correctly;

Even after you have the wires sorted out, as to which contact pins they go to, DOUBLE-check again. Do NOT just go by the color code of the wires.
Why?

You do NOT want to accidentally connect the +5 Volts (VCC), to the Ground!

Explaining further;
You connect the VCC wire, (Red), of the USB port in the Front Panel, to the Ground pin on the USB header on the motherboard.

(Which means the Ground wire of the USB port, (Black), will probably also be connected to the VCC pin, on the USB header of the motherboard)

Zzzzzzap! There goes your front USB ports. Both USB front panel headers on the motherboard, will be DONE!

Make sure!

Going on;
1) VCC or Vcc, goes back relating to Transistor technology.
Just think of it as the Positive, or power wire.
It is.
It is 5 Volts DC.

2) GND is Ground. It's a DC circuit, and you have a Positive, and a Negative, or Ground.

3) USB1-
That is -> Data-

USB0 is for one USB port in the Front Panel.
USB1 is for another USB port in the Front Panel.

[ Each USB header on the motherboard can be connected, to TWO USB ports on the Front Panel.
Therefore for the two JUSB1 and JUSB2, you can connect Four USB ports in the Front Panel ]

Data- on one USB port in the Front Panel, goes to USB0-

Data- on the other USB port in the Front Panel, goes to USB1-

4) Data+
Same thing.
Data+ on one of the USB ports in the Front Panel, goes to USB0+
Data+ on the other USB port in the Front Panel, goes to USB1+

EACH side of JUSB1 and JUSB2, will support one USB port on the Front Panel.
Two sides per JUSB1 and JUSB2 = 4 USB ports on the Front Panel.

On the next page go down to the heading > File Download
At the end of > Motherboard, Socket AM3, Motherboard Manual, click on > View Detail
Finally go to the right of Download, and click on the blue Zip Disk icon.

In the small window that comes up >

,make sure there is a green dot in the circle to the left of Save File.

If not, left-click on the empty circle to the left of Save File.

There are Two green USB headers that are parallel to the bottom edge of the motherboard.

Looking at the USB headers there are two rows of pins.

The Top row of pins is numbered Evenly
The Bottom row of pins is numbered Odd.

On the Top row starting from the Left side of the motherboard, going towards the Right,
Pins 2, 4 ,6, 8, and 10.

On the Bottom row starting from the Left side of the motherboard, going towards the Right,
Pins 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.

BOTH are numbered the same way.

EACH USB header can provide Two USB ports.

A) Pins 1 and Pin 2 are VCC

B) Pins 3 and Pin 4 are D -

C) Pins 5 and Pin 6 are D+

D) Pins 7 and Pin 8 are Ground

E) Pins 9 and 10 are not used. (Actually there is NO Pin 9)

Follow the color code of the wires in the cables coming from the USB port.

Use a multimeter to test each wire, if you are not sure what wire goes to what pin in the USB port.
Perform a continuity test with the multimeter set to OHM's.

Touch the individual wire in the USB cable, coming from the USB port, with the Positive (Red) probe lead.
Now touch a pin with the Negative (Black) probe lead of the multimeter.

When the meter scale shows continuity, you know what pin that wire goes to.
Write it down. Mark the wire with a small piece of masking tape, write on the tape what pin the wire goes to.

VCC, D-, D+, or Ground. (GND)

Plugging in a USB port.


You have an A side and B side, or 1 and 2. Starting from pin 1, usually has an arrow pointing to it, the wires should read as follows: 1= A/1 +5vac 2= B/2 +5vac
3= A/1 -D 4= B/2 -D
5= A/1 +D 6= B/2 +D
7= A/1 ground 8= B/2 ground
9= no pin 10= no connection

Havimg prob with the 2 usb ports located in front


Hi manky, Normally front USB ports have a pair of 4 wire cable with connectors marked red wire is vcc; white wire is -D; green wire is +D; and black wire is gnd. The motherboard would normally have two pairs of dual pin connectors that would be sitting side by side or in-line with uneven pins - 4 and 5 pins; then another 4 and 5 pins. Please refer to the attached simple diagram for your connection. For some reason I couldn't get hold of a manual from the Gigabyte site of your particular model GA-81KHXT. Nonetheless hopes this works for you. Pls post again how things turn up. Good luck and kind regards.
