Question about Hitachi 53FDX20B 53" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

TV Has 3D Look Hitting used to fix but not anymore

HITACHI 53FDX20B
TV would work fine when turned on then after a while it would go 3d looking and hitting it would fix it. Sometimes you would have to hit it harder than other times. Then it got to where it did it more often and it would do it only after a few minutes of being on and now its messed up as soon as you turn it on and hitting doesnt fix it anymore.

I did Magic Focus and it checked red, then froze as soon as it got to green then after sitting on green for a minute it gave black screen with a 4 in the bottom right, which I assume is an error code. So I looked it up in the service manual and here is what it gave for the countermeasure:

1. Check the placement of sensor
2. Adjustment check (H/V size, centering)
3. Conv. amp. gain check *1 (check resistor values only)
*1 -- RK 41, 46, 50, 54, 58, 62 check these resistors.

Looked in Service manual couldn't find anything about RK41 and don't know if its even in the tv.
Symbol Part Part Description
No. No.
RK46 - AT03193S - 1.5 OHM 1W
RK50 - AT03199S - 2.7 OHM 1W
RK54 - AT03191S - 1.2 OHM 1W
RK58 - AT03206S - 4.7 OHM 1W
RK62 - AT03195S - 1.8 OHM 1W

Also I took the convergence board out just to see If I could see anything obviously wrong and on the bottom there was a wire running from one of the convergence ic's to a Zener Diode RD36E TAPE(B3) SI 500MW 36V not really sure if this is normal or not but I thought maybe that zener diode could be the problem as well but i'm not really sure how to test any of this stuff.

Can someone please help me out here? I took a few picture of what the screen looks like if you need to see them to diagnose the problem. Thanks in advance!

I looked at it again today and now there are like 3 of the resistors it listed they look a little burnt up. Should I just replace the 3 that look burnt up or go ahead and replace all the ones it listed? Also do you think that wire running on the bottom of the board from the ic to the zener diode could be bad? Should I replace that zener diode too? And radio shack doesn't carry these resistors do they? lol

  • xseekndestro Dec 12, 2008

Ok, so I went to radio shack and all I could find is 10-Ohm Metal Oxide Resistors 1 watt 5% tolerance. They are bigger than the ones that are on the board and a different color. The ones on the board are green and the ones I bought from radio shack are grey. im not sure its kinda hard to tell but the bands almost look the same color (brown, black, black, gold or maybe the second one is grey kinda hard to tell but im pretty sure its black). Will these ones work or do I need to just find the ones that go with the part number?

  • xseekndestro Dec 12, 2008

rk50, rk54, rk58 those are the 3 that are burnt.

  • xseekndestro Dec 14, 2008

Ok i'm trying to order them from mcm electronics and I can't seem to find them. I typed in 2.7 ohm and it returned nothing and then I typed in 1.2 and it returned 3 results none of which i need. Can you please help me? lol sorry and thanks for all of your help, I really appreciate it.

  • xseekndestro Dec 14, 2008

ok wait I think i found them if the flameproof ones are ok RESISTOR 1W 2.7 OHM FLAMEPROOF 10 PER BAG
are these the ones i need or i also saw carbon film? whats the difference?

The convergence IC's are bad. (They are probably STK392-110) If you look at the connections, yuo'll probably see little rings in the solder where the pins come thru the board. Your problem probably started as bad connections and has now led to complete failure of the IC's. Replace them both. Look for burned resistors

Just replace the one's that are burnt. You should be able to get them at radio shack. Make sure they are 1 watt resistors. Use an ohmeter to make sure all the resistors are within tolerance on the list. Replace the conv IC's. Don't worry about the wire. It is OK.

Can you tell wich resistors are burnt. You can order generic 1 watt resistors with whatever value youeed the to be. If you can tell me which resistors you need, I can tell you their value

You have the correct values RK50 - 2.7 ohm, RK54- 1.2 Ohm, RK58 - 4.7 ohm. These should all be 1 watt resistors. You can order them by description from MCM electronics.com

Go ahead and get the flameproof ones. The difference is the carbons will burn if excess current is sent thru them whereas the flameproof ones won't. Let me know if you need anything else

When using magic focus we get error code 3. How do I fix this?

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.
This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
•Screen looks 3D
•Colors don't line up
•One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
•Screen is bowed or warped.
•TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Here are some photos of convergence problems

Yes - You will need to either remove the circuit board or lift up the tray. If you are not sure how to do it yourself read the link below.

I have a Hitachi 53FDX20B and the picture is looks stramge

It is not your Picture tubes that are bad, it is your Convergence IC's. The IC # to use is STK392-180. These are better than the originals, also invest in these resistors: 1.5 ohm 1w,,,1.8 ohm 1w,,,2.2 ohm 1w. (watt). I would by 4 each. Your soldering skills will come into play so roll up your sleeves and go to work.....Good luck ! and let me know how you do.

When i turn on tv the screen is turning green

Solution:
Your TV has a convergence problem. Here are some of the most common symptoms.

Screen looks 3D
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed in but stationary.
Here is a quick test....
Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence or magic focus section
Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.
You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.
If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.
You can get a repair kit that includes all the parts from www.TvRepairKits.com.
They have put together a kit for the Hitachi TV sets.
The kit includes a photo instruction guide, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, etc.
Everything you need to fix it yourself. Its a fairly easy fix on the Hitachi sets.

Convergence problem

did you replace the six convergence resistors with the ICs? as Hitachi recommends replacing the six resistors when the ICs are replaced as the old ICs can harm the resistors and they will need replacement.

Blurred picture

Hitachi > 53FDX20B blurry picture

I would start 1st by checking all resistors ie.
RK43 2.2 ohm - 2W
RK47 1.5 ohm - 2W
RK51 2.2 ohm - 2W
RK55 1.5 ohm - 2W
RK59 2.2 ohm - 2W
RK63 1.5 ohm - 2W
If I were you I would also replace the convergence chips. From the above thread it's clear that they are of different quality so they may last different lengths of time (B&D is a good place to buy good quality ones).
I found a free pdf service manual for 53FDX20B on a Polish web site: http://instrukcje.elektroda.net/main1750.html
