Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

GE JVM1630BJ Microwave went completely dead with no power

Our GE spacemakerXL microwave oven (model JVM1630BJ) is only about 3 years old and has worked great until today. I used it this morning but then it just went completely dead after I turned it on. The outlet tested fine so it isn't a breaker. I went ahead and replaced the fuse and the power got back on again, but as soon as I press the light, it went dead again. Replacing the fuse did not help this time. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,
David

    Thanks for your response!

Sorry I was not cleared on the issue, yes the cooktop lights. After replacing the burn fuse the Microwave went back on again, while resetting the clock we press the cooktop lights and all of the sudden went dead again. So, we decided to put another new fuse in and this time the power didn’t even comes up. We believe it could be a short circuits somewhere, but we don’t know.

    Thanks again for your help,

    David

Sounds like the bulb shorted, which is very common, and the first time it blew the fuse.

It sounds like when you put the new fuse in and tried it again, the bulb was still shorted, and this time it damaged the board.

We see (and repair) thisa lot. The problem is on the control panel, whichwe regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about aweek.

Atour Web site, we have a videoavailable showing how to remove a typicalover the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure oftenoccurs when a bulb goes out and the filamentshorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without firstunplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such afailure on the controller.

This can often alsoaffect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can beinoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our serviceand critical safety information and disassembly information is at oursite, and our link is at ourlisting hereon FixYa.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of yourfull model number) for more information & help.

We installed a GE Spacemaker Microwave. I put some potatoes in and the microwave was working, suddenly it went off. No light nothing, it just went completely dead. Came back ON after 15 mins,started...

The main fuse may be intermittent, causing complete power failure, the other possibility is a defective door switch not operating properly, or loose plug in the power feed, I suggest a technician to take closer look at the system because this could prove tricky to find the culprit.

under the outer cover, its either a 10-15-or 20 amp ceramic safety fuse avail at most hardware stores, the amp rating is on the side of the fuse, if the new one blows then either the H.V. diode/capacitor or the magnetron can be suspects

GE Spacemaker Over the Range Microwave Oven

sandy, i think your magnetron just went bad. can you see if there is a black spot or dirt accumulating on the microwave guide cover. it is the gray rectangular thing at the side of the wall . these black spots are from oil or food that have accumulated and has been heated over and over again untill it becomes carbon and becomes conductive. these carbon then conducts electricity to the metal casing holding the wave guide cover. if this happens, the tip of the megnetron would spark against the wall and burn the tip of the magnetron and short it out. if it has a fuse, it could pop out and might still save the magnetron. if there is none, then you could have end up with a bad magnetron. decide how much a magnetron first before you buy a new oven. i hope i was able to help.
