Question about ViewSonic NextVision N3760W 37 in. LCD Television

21 Answers

After power-on, screen stays on "Viewsonic" splash screen

The moral of the story: don't mess with things you don't understand.

I got into the "Service Menu" and, while some tweaks are clear, I messed with one that wasn't. I believe it was labeled "freeze frame".

Since, all the TV will do is turn on and stay stuck on the Viewsonic logo. None of the buttons work. To turn the TV off requires the power cord be unplugged.

The TV has been unplugged for over a day and the settings haven't reset.

Obviously this is a software/firmware issue, not a hardware one. I just can't figure out how to do a factory reset without access to menus.

Regrettably, none of these options work. The TV remains stuck at the Viewsonic logo splash-screen, regardless of what sources are connected.

  • CJOttawa Dec 03, 2008

I tried the reset combo - disconnect power, hold the "up" and "power" buttons, reconnect power while continuing to hold buttons.

    No luck.

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

I called Viewsonic's support line but got no further with the problem. They did give me the service menu code (991) which didn't work as the TV wasn't recognizing any commands.

They also forwarded my info to "a different department" which is supposed to contact me with a form to fill out to possibly obtain a service manual. I'm hopeful they will and said manual will indicate some other options.

Does anyone reading this have the service manual for the Viewsonic N3760w HDTV?

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

Is anyone aware of a service centre for Viewsonic HDTV's that knows how to reset them to factory settings?

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

Sadly, leecom72, it was the 991 menu that got me in to this mess. ;) The TV no longer accepts any commands from the remote.

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

No luck getting into the menu. The TV won't recognize the menu button is being pressed, nor any button press on the remote or any combination thereof.

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

I tried the "repair service" box but as I'm in Canada, lookup by ZIP code doesn't work. (we use 6 character postal codes)

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

Keep in mind folks, this is a LCD *television* not an LCD computer monitor. The "post" test I'm reading about seems more related to monitors, not HDTVs. Source signal has never been a criteria for menu access; I simply can't get into the menu now at all.

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

    Fixe_You,
Sadly, leaving it unplugged for a couple of days hasn't solved the issue.

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

I emailed Viewsonic... we'll see what they say!

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

No paper-clip / pin-hole anywhere on the set. Keep in mind: this is an HDTV, not a computer monitor.

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

I'll give Viewsonic Canada a call in the morning.

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

    emissionwiz,
I agree with you and have actually called Viewsonic twice now, emailed them once. So far, nada, though I got farther on the second call but still no solution.
I will try their Canadian number tomorrow though.

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

    funkyjacob,
Yes, I've tried all of the remote buttons and all of the buttons on the side of the HDTV to no avail. It appears none are being recognized by the TV.

This wasn't caused by hitting freeze in a regular menu it was a setting in the service menu.

  • CJOttawa Dec 04, 2008

    rhoncruz,
No luck with holding those key combinations. Menu and Power buttons still don't work once the TV is on.

  • CJOttawa Dec 05, 2008

    send2shwetha,
There is no "enter" button on the TV. As previously indicated, unplugging the TV for several days still doesn't solve the problem.

  • CJOttawa Dec 05, 2008

    sintm_112,
I have inspected every part of this TV. There does not appear to be a reset hole of any kind.

  • CJOttawa Dec 05, 2008

    taran_2005,
I've tried this procedure already - it's an HDTV, not a monitor, so this function doesn't appear to be an option.

  • CJOttawa Dec 10, 2008

    ndguy2481,
Nope, I find no reset switch, anywhere on the TV.

The only option left is to replace main board of your Viewsonic N3760W TV and you can try to have main board from Shop Jimmy.
TV is not in condition to communicate with PC for firmware update / flash as you said its stuck on Viewsonic logo screen and all no button works.

With the TV powered on, hold the Menu and Enter buttons down together, then press the power button. This should correct the problem. If not unplug the TV and leave it off for an hour or more. This will reset the TV back to the factory options. If neither of these solutions correct the problem please let me know. I believe the menu+enter and then off will stop the problem.

All freeze frame is that it takes a snap shot of the picture and freezes it. They use it in most projectors so that people can freeze at a picture or chart in a conferance or at schools.

You should be able to change the setting which is on your remote it should say freeze or snap shot or something like that.
Once you have done that it should continue normally

have you tried the buttons on the tv not using the remote?

If you have any questions please dont hesitate to ask

Its human tendency to know what is new and latest. This fascinating to every human being, so dont worry about it.

This problem can be rectified in a simpler way, just wait and relax. You are at right station to get it fixed.

Just check the TV with all its cable and replug it to power. Make your remote battery replace and then try it again.

Looks like the EEPROM chip is busted. you may have to get it replaced.

You can find a repair center nearby by entering your Zip code in the box to the right marked "REPAIR SERVICE". that will throw up a list of service centers in your area. Mention you were refered by Fixya, and you just might get a discount :)

There are three pages of "secret" menus accessed by pressing 9-9-1 on the remote control. These are esoteric settings such as film pull-down adjustments and S-Video auto-detect. Not for novices - you could really mess up your monitor! Fortunately there's a factory-reset in these menus to correct any damage you inflict on your TV. The only way to leave the secret menu is to turn off the set. Then turn it back on again.

hope this works and kind regards

Hi.
as Mr.Gink said the memory of ur unit shud get a flash.
this freeze parameter now is stuck in ur memory and the memory shud be flashed while giving the unit a new OSD Firmware.

but the bad news is Viewsonic isn't a major brand so the Fix in this case is rare, especially the upgrading/flashing memory case.

one thing that u can do in this case is to take it a part and replace the memory with a well working one or even take the memory chip to someone that can handle this cases like flashing BIOS and flash memories.

good luck.

Thanx For Using FixYA.

How long have you had this tv? If it is under warranty, see if Viewsonic will check it out for you and even if it isn't. Otherwise they may also be able to suggest what you can do or send you any kind of firmware update. Give them a call and tell them you want to speak to a service technician at (800) 688-6688 as they probably have a quick fix for it or at least can give you better options if nothing else after you have tried the other experts' solutions as I have nothing to add to them. Let me know what you find.

Before i get into detail, try this, it may just be this and easily solves.

Make sure it connected to something thats known to be putting out a signal like a P.C. or T.V.

Then turn on the monitor and pres each button once and see if you get anything.

Also, what type of connector does it have. VGA or DVI or a DVI adapter to fit it onto a VGA video card.?

What im thinking is that it may be stuck in DIGITAl or ANOLOGUE mode and whats its connected to is the other.

Also, try only plugging in the power cord but not the video or data cable and se eif you get a POST check.

( GREN RED AND BLUE bars indicating it works but has no signal.)

If this comes up, see if you can open the manu now. Allthough some models wont let you till the signal cable is attached.

Just give this a shot and get back if no results and we can try something else.

Good Luck

Well, my friend had a similar problem with another brand and he was told that it had some internal hardware issu and would not POST at all and just show the splash screen.

If you power it on and your not getting the POST then more than likely its a gonner. But as long as you have it, dont give up. As a last result, you could open it up and inspect any copacitors and chips for signs of damage such as swollen capacitors or a distinct burt smell or just burn marks around any of the chipsets.

You can use a cotton swab and some alcohol to clean the boards and circuitry. Unplug and disconect it first of course.

  • Chris Busch
    Chris Busch Dec 05, 2008

When the screen comes on, try pressing different combinations of buttons.

The option you selected, FREEZ FRAME, bassically freezes the image and doesnt change untill its turned off, Why it wont turn off after unplugging it is strange, it may have an internal battery that olds the setting.

Like a Bios battery. You could try opening it up and removing it.

    Just a thought, good luck

Sorry I missed the line that said you had unplugged already, Viewsonic is not a big brand and screen may be re-manufactured. I dont have the service manual, I can see what I find on the internet , and post on the next few hours.

If there is no reset, and the firmware had been damaged, you will need to to have it reflashed at a repair shop, I dont think firmware for this unit is available on the internet.

There is a "Memory recall" option on your TV to set it to default factory settings, see: Viewsonic Reset

  • Ginko
    Ginko Dec 03, 2008

Before trying the memory reset, do the following , is a general reset procedure for Viewsonic LCD monitors , it should be the same on TVs:

    1. Turn theAC power off using the switch at the back of the tv if present, or unplug power cable.

    2. Press and hold Up and Power buttons on the front panel

    3. Turn the AC power back on, or reconnect the cable

    4. Keep holding the buttons until you get the message "ALL RESET"

Let me know how it goes.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Dec 03, 2008

See if you can call the menu, if you can call the menu there is a Setup >>System Reset option.

You could also try entering in service mode, be aware that in service mode you can cause more damage, this operation should be done by a repairman.
I think you enter the service mode menu then
    4,7,2,5.

If nothing work, there is a firmware upgrade and service port at the back, that must be connected to a computer, with specific software. That can be done only at a repair shop.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Dec 04, 2008

You reste the freeze option on Servce menu by unpluggign power. What you are experiencing , it is not the freeze option, that is used on service menu to do diagnostics, and is only temporary.

What you have is the computer not starting because the firmware had been collaterally damaged when using the service menu (probably turning TV off while a command was being executed).

The TV must be connected to a laptop to the service port at the back (on some model you use the 15 pins VGA), and firmware installed from image disk, same as a BIOS upgrade.

You can call Viewsonic, and ask them if they can send you a copy of the disk, and the cable. Usually this kind of software is distributed to licenced repairs only.

If Viewsonic does not distribute the software to non repairman, the only way out , is finding a not-too-expensive repair shop, and ask a quote for a firmware upgrade of this kind, in UK we charge 50 pounds or so for this job.

Fault at its main digital board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts.

In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.

Power surge caused by lightning strike, TV is dead, any Thoughtd/ does this damage every components?

Lightning can cause serious damage. You will surely want to get a professional diagnoses. What is damaged depends on where the surge came in at, and the intensity of the surge. If the surge came in through the power cable, most likely your power supply board has damage. But I have seen situations where the surge came in though an HDMI or coax connection and just take out the main board. But the moral of the story is to get a proper diagnoses, you could have several boards damaged.

The tv T-CON board only board left could causes this problems. That the board usally sit at the middle at the botton of the LCD screen panel.Tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a refurbish T-CON board for the replacement.

Screen won't light up - but power light is on?

YEP, HERE WE ARE!
DID YOUR SCREEN LIT FOR A SPLIT SECOND THEN WENT SOUR? DO YOU HEAR ANY SOUND FROM TV SPEAKERS? WAS TV HARD TO START IN A PAST?
MIGHT BE FEW DIFFERENT ISSUES.
STARTING POWER SUPPLY(MOST LIKELY), IN CASE OF PREVIOUS HESITATION OR INVERTOR'S FAILURE(SET STAYS ON, HAVE SOUND). LAST THING: MAIN MODULE OR DISPLAY ADAPTER MODULE.
GOOD LUCK,
LET ME KNOW DETAILS,
PLEASE.

I have a Viewsonic flat-screen tv, it displays "menu locked" ??

Try holding the VOL + and VOL - buttons on the TV (not on the remote) down together. You should see a "unlocking buttons" message on screen. This might work. However, I tried it repeatedly, as told to by the Viewsonic "service" rep, and it didn't work for me. Viewsonic is ****, and so is its "service"!

ViewSonic N2700 Blinking power button

replace the power supply, buy it on the internet by looking up the model number on the power supply. I have this tv and it did this until I ordered a new one. it runs hot and has a loud fan.
