Make sure you are not in some custom Setting or function. I suppose it is possible the selector dial is stripped and it is just spinning and not doing anything.

Looks like you need to take this to a camera store and have them check it over. I don't know of any setting that would cause what you describe.

How do I set my Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR to auto mode

If you mean the auto exposure mode, turn the mode dial on the top of the camera to the "A+" position, between the "P" and the lightning bolt.
If you mean autofocus, set the switch on the lens to the AF position if the lens has an autofocus switch. On the camera, press the AF button (cursor-right) then turn the command dial to select the desired mode.
If you mean the auto white balance, press the WB button (cursor-up) then turn the command dial to select the desired mode.
In the auto exposure mode the ISO mode is set to auto, and you can't change this.

Be aware that the built in flash does not pop up automatically in all picture modes. Try it when in the different modes (on the mode dial) and see what I mean. Does it popo up when manually opened ?, (small button on front left hand side of the viewing pentaprism/flash housing.)

You may have the white balance set incorrectly. If so, set it to "auto white balance".

EOS Rebel XTi 400D flash not popping up

Flash will automatically pop out only in AUTO mode, if the camera needs some additional lightning. In manual modes, you should use the flash button located at the left down side of the flash compartment, to manually force the flash to pop up

This could happen if you're using flash and your shutter speed is set too high. If you're not set to Program or Auto mode, try changing to Program mode and see if that solves your problem.
Otherwise, it sounds like a sensor issue. Call Canon support - I've found them helpful. Check the website for phone number.

400D manual mode

You are exposure compensation in manual mode. If you want the shots lighter, either open up the aperture or slow the shutter. The exposure compensation feature is to override the automatic settings determined by the camera in the auto-exposure modes.

Sounds to me like the internal contacts aren't working correctly. Let your local camera store take a look. Hope it's under warranty.

Return to full auto setting

To set the camera to shoot fully automatically (camera selects f-stop, shutter speed, exposure, etc), turn to Mode Dial to the green rectangle icon, right next to the "P" on the dial.

To reset all settings to their original default settings, the procedures are on page 100 in the manual.
1. Press the Menu button and use the Jump button to go to the Setup 2 menu (far right).
2. Use the arrow keys to scroll to "Clear Settings" and press the Set button.
3. Scroll to "Clear all camera settings" and press the Set button.
4. Scroll to "OK" and press the Set button.
