If the failed hard disk drive is replaced with the exact same capacity, RPM and make of hard drive, then the array can be rebuilt. Raid 0 cannot be rebuilt as each drive contains half of the data, If RAID 1 then can be rebuilt as data on each drive is an exact copy. However if combination of RAID 0 and RAID 1 then can be rebuilt. It's best really to handel this hands on, I recommend taking it to a computer technician especially if the information on it is important.

My Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive ("HMNHD") used to work perfectly, until I reset my Dell Inspiron 1545 and installed Windows 7 to upgrade it from Vista. I backed up all my files, program data,...

First and the foremost thing is that when u backup any info to an external hard drive try only back up the data that u have saved. Coz application cannot be saved if done they cannot be retrived. Now if those files are asking for permissions then right click on the file - properties - then on the securities - click on add - then Under Enter the object names to seclect type in Everyone then click on Check Name now Everyone will come in Underlined - click on OK - U will come back to properties tab then on top click Everyone - And under Permissions for everyone Under Full Control Check ALLOW - Then OK
this should fix the issue.
If this does not helps, since u have transfered all the data back to the PC why not format the External Hard Drive. Connect the Drive right click on it the see it teh format option is there or not if present then foprmat it.

Says 4gb not 250gb.

It sounds like your OS (windows XP+, I presume, as it's NTFS) is reading the wrong partition information from the hard disk.

Use this (free) partition software to delete all partitions on the external drive (and make VERY sure that it's pointing at the external, and not your main hard disk!).
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
...so delete all partitions; make a new one and see if that is 250 GB.
If yes, format.  Sorted.
If no, you could try editing the partition table directly with this:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/tools/pq/utilities/PTEDIT32.zip
...you'll again have to be careful you're working on the right hard disk.  To use this, you'll need to know the number of heads, cylinders etc.  This data might be on a label on the disk (inside the external drive case), or you might be able to get it from the disk's manufacturer; either on their website or by emailing their tech support.

If editing the partition table doesn't work, or if the numbers keep reverting/changing, then it's highly likely that the hard disk is stuffed.  Only thing to do then is replace the hard disk in the external case (make sure you swap for the same type: IDE for IDE and SATA for SATA); or explore your warranty options.

Hope that helped.  Good luck!

My hard drive was knocked of the table and landed on carpet

Computers do not like being dropped especially when it is powered up and running. It can do a heaps of damage.
If the hard drive in the computer makes a clicking sound and it won't boot up and/or an error message says it cannot find the hard disk or operating system, then the hard disk is damaged beyound repair.
With luck if the hard disk is only damaged then you can replace the hard drive and install Windows on the new hard drive with the device drivers and your programs. Your data on the old hard drive is gone unless you backed up your data onto CD, flash drive etc.

Exactly same problem

check your network for conflicts, check power supply, fan and nic card, if your sure it's not the the drives inside the drive case, I have had 4 of these fail on me @work with different issues power supply nic card and both drives 4 units did the same thing and they were under warranty so when I got it back, I sold them and bought The Seagate BlackArmor NAS 420. no problems with them as of yet. Lacie get hot and components get hot and fail because there is not enough air flow I think.

Problem with buffalo 1tb external hard drive

If you're using windows XP then go to start > control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disk management. See if the disk is showing up there but hasn't been allocated a drive letter, if it hasn't then right click on that drive and press "assign drive letter". Be sure to do it to the right one, you could quite easily change another drive's letter by accident otherwise.

I plugged another power supply, somewhat more powerful, and my maxtor came on for a split second before turning off... now with the original adapter it does not switch on.. please HELPP!!!??

Hey,

the circuit inside is damaged becouse of overvoltage. the hard drive inside may still be ok. You could remove the hard drive from the case and plug it in to a computer directly to see if it works.

80 GB external drive failed

Have you tried the windows troubleshooter on the drive yet? (from properties select the hardware tab and the troubleshooter is there). if no luck, but the troubleshooter gives you some info, please let us know. Also see if windows will let you defragment the drive. Run a virus check on the drive if you haven't recently and it lets you. If you have access to another computer, check the drive on that to see if you get anything different. (the OS version of the other machine shouldn't matter) If you open the unit up and remove the actual hard drive, then install it as an internal drive on a PC, you will bypass any possibility of the external drive extra bits being the problem. Run a disk diagnostics utility on the drive, if you need one, try (there are many more also); http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Disk_Analysis_Utilities/DriveSitter.html or use the built in windows one "chkdsk" which you can find in the folder C:\WINDOWS\system32. Just double click on the chkdsk.exe icon. If none of this gets you anywhere, chances are the drive has developed a fault in the location where the File allocation table is stored (this is usually the part most accessed). Formatting the drive again will probably solve this by saving the FAT elsewhere, but you would lose your data. For valuable data, there are data recovery companies that usually charge a fortune, but ask if you need this and we can try and source one near you for a quote. Ask again if you need more help or have more info from trying stuff out Hope this helps :)
