Out of balance

My Whirlpool calypso top loading washing machine is out of balance. On the spin cycle it shakes and gyrates like its having an epileptic fit. It started because I overloaded it with blue jeans, but now it does it even on a light load.

Any ideas?

I rebalanced it but I still have a problem. It gets stuck on the spin cycle and makes a loud clunk when it stops spinning. Then it resets to a six minute spin and starts over again. The code 0b appeared on the screen.

2 Ideas to check :)

1. out-of-balance switch misaligned.
2. Tub rests on a carriage that is usually sprung on 3 axes. Perhaps one of the springs is sprung, broken, or came loose? Would make an out-of-balance condition more likely

For more explanation :p

Really, as long as the washer is visibly level and sitting on solid surface (concrete), level won't matter. This washer has no out-of-balance mechanism, because it doesn't need one. Unlike most washers, this one doesn't spin and drain at the same time. It has what is referred to as a "neutral drain" transmission. What that means is, when it is time to drain, the transmission doesn't spin. It stays in neutral for 2-4 minutes; long enough to drain all the excess water. Then the timer stops the motor for a few seconds, and then restarts and that's when it spins. If you run a full cycle, with at least 10 minutes of agitate time, listen at the beginning of the final spin (don't interrupt it by lifting the lid). After the agitate time has expired in rinse, it should stop, then restart and begin the drain period. If the tub is actually spinning, this indicates a problem with the transmission. It is a fairly common failure, but thankfully it's an easy transmission to replace. This function should be tested anytime the unit is serviced for any reason. These transmissions are warranted for 5 years for the part itself, with the owner paying all labor and transportation costs. If it immediately starts to spin the tub, stop it and reset it for another 10 minutes of agitate time. Sometimes if the transmission is cold, it may not work the first time, but will on subsequent cycles. The short version is that if it was loaded evenly, it should stay even through the entire cycle, provided the correct water level was selected. There are a few other posssibilities, should you want to check them. You can set it for a fast spin with nothing in it, wait for it to get to full speed, and then stop it. Just as the tub comes to a stop, you should hear water sloshing. This indicates the liquid filled balance ring has not lost its charge. If you don't hear it (try a few times), the balance ring has probably lost its charge which will cause it to shake severely regardless of the load. There are 3 horizontal springs and one vertical one in the back (most viewable from under the machine). I've rarely seen trouble with the 3, but I have seen the one vertical spring rust and break off. It would be laying under the unit or hanging loose if this is the case. Another possibility is the slide plate under the tub has 3 tan colored kidney-shaped slide pads that may be worn. If you're unfamiliar with what I am talking about, you probably shouldn't try to inspect them. They are fairly buried under the outer tub, and kind of hard to access. Hope this helps. Oops...I forgot. You can also try to reset the rear leveling legs. They are self-adjusting, so all you have to do is tip the machine toward you, up about 6-8 inches, and lower it back down. You should be able to hear the spring loaded mechanism moving as you raise and lower it. If it's stuck, use a large flat blade screwdriver and pry the highest leg down to release it. Reset the rear legs again and see if that helps.....

    HEY GOT THE SOLUTION :)

If the motor controller detects an unrecoverable off-balance condition, the machine controller will shut down and display an "ob" for Off Balance
The lid switch must be opened at least once before restarting the cycle, if this condition occurs. Opening the lid will allow the customer to view and redistribute the load.

Press STOP/CANCEL to clear the display........

I understand your problem, Have you tried to run it with no clothes in it? Does it do then also? If not then the issues is clothes balance. If t does it with no clothes then it has a bent bracket or shaft. Is it under warranty? I will look up the machine to see if there is an active repair manual. Please let me know if you have tried to run the machine with no clothes.

Thanks
PJ

The counter balance of your washer might be out of place at this time, and might need a service tech to inspect, ot you might have place your load unevenly, as a first step have you tried putting all clothes evenly? this could happen if the loads are not balanced correctly
le tme know if you still have prob

Ensure that the machine is well balanced and at level, if it keeps shaking you may need to have internal springs and strut checked.

On the bottom of the machine you should be able to relevel it using the feet, they will twist like screws, all you have to do is alter them until the machine is level again

Washer spins than it gets off balance and shuts

Hi, Washing machines can become unbalanced when the wash load has too much weight in one area of the basket. A machine in good working order can handle most problems through its balancing mechanisms. However, when washing heavy single items such as comforters, the machine's tub can become so lopsided that it damages the washer.

Washing machines that get unbalanced can shake, make banging noises, and even more across the floor. When machines are secured in one place, they can vibrate and bang so much the entire house shakes and things fall off shelves. This is not good for the washer. Bolts can come loose, and parts can break.

When washing heavy items such as pillows or down coats, stay near the washer so you can correct any balance problems as they occur. Some washers have an automatic shut-off feature when they become too far off-balance. If yours does not, stop the spin cycle, open the lid, and redistribute the load. If this is a continuing problem, you may want to wash heavy items at a coin-operated laundry in a heavy-duty machine.

Take care

Very noisy on spin cycle, not out of balance

Hi, check leveling of machine, machine should be proper leveled on all side, use spirit level to adjust legs, there should be no rocking motion, in any direction after leveling, put hands on top of machine and try to rock it sids to side, there should be no movements, also check for overloading, be careful when washing things like bath towels, etc, they absorb lots of water, eg. one regular bath towel are equivalent, to six pants, six tops. or possible springs or bushings broken, you need open machine and check.

Whirlpool Calypso ''ob'' problem

ob Off Balance If the motor controller detects an unrecoverable off-balance condition, the machine controller will shut down and display an ob for Off Balance The lid switch must be opened at least once before restarting the cycle, if this condition occurs. Opening the lid will allow the customer to view and redistribute the load.
if this does not fix the issue it is most likely the strut and shock system that is falty on the machine. you could replace them yourself but they are fairly expensive
