2000 subaru outback/ clunk when i put it in reverse

I have a 2000 subura legacy/outback. When i put it in reverse it makes a loud clunk noise. Sometimes it does not make the noise initially, but as i am reversing it does it.

Another problem i am having is when i am at a light etc. the car will vibrate. It vibrates in drive, and park put when i put it in Neutral is goes away. As it is vibrating, if i turn the steering wheel some it stops and wants to lunge forward. Then it will start vibrating again.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Ali

Turn off engine . get the vehicle on level ground. try to move driveshaft back an forth or,by rocking in twist motion,,, try to hear a knock,,,this would indicate a worn universal joint.either front or back, if you are good enough to discern which one is making the klunk, change both to be on the safe side. think they may be about 20 dol apiece.

SOURCE: When i put it in reverse it makes a loud clunk

Hi Ali,

This sounds like one or more of your motor/powerplant mounts is broken. Here is an easy test:

Have someone sit in the driver's sear with engine running and trans. in Park.
You stand in front with the hood open. Have them shift from Park to Reverse, and then Drive and back to Reverse and Park, taking time to stay in each gear and give some throttle while holding the brake pedal tight. This will rock or move the engine a certain amount as they shift through the gears and apply power lightly. It will move alot more violently with broken mounts.

If you have a clunking noise on Reverse shifts, you should be able reproduce this with the hood up and pinpoint the noise and/or sight the faulty motor mount with a friend's help. Good luck, I hope this puts you on the right track to fixing this annoying noise.

Sincerely, Tater Todd

Front CV joints, especially if the thumping is worse when turning to the left or right.

2000 subaru inpreza outback sport front differential making clunking noise. How do I check/change the differential fluid?

are you sure it isn't the cv joints making the noise. They are usually noisier when turning corners.

1997 subaru outback make clicking noise on in reverse. Also, sometimes when the car is turned off, the car lurches a bit

does it click while reversing straight or while turning? Sounds like a stick shift. Lunging probably due to e-brake needing adjustment(if stick shift). If your car only clicks while turning in reverse you need new front axles and can probably drive that way for a while

2000 Subaru Outback transmission problem

After a good deal of research and several shops suggesting a rebuild of the transmission, I decided to have the trans fluid and filters changed before doing anything. It was a tough call because it could have been a waste of $125. As soon as the spin off filter was removed you could see it was blocked. So the hydraulic pressure in the system was way down, still enough to engage reverse and enough to work all the shifts, but not enough to engage forward without a slight tap on the accelerator.

My Subaru has 240 000 km on it and I suppose the clutch pack rebuild wouldn't hurt, but as it is now it engages quickly and shifts up are noticeably smoother.

May not be the solution for every case, but it solved my situation.
